E Portfolio Platform

I am planning on using Wix for my e-portfolio platform. I was originally thinking of using WordPress because that is what I know and I normally stay in my comfort zone, but after reading the articles and listen to Dr. O’Hara speak about them, Wix seems the best in terms of its looks and its templates. I was a little concerned about not being able to change the themes once I start, but I think as long as I make a good choice in the beginning, I should be okay. I think I am going to base mine closely on how Nina Wiggins from the video Dr. O’Hara sent out because I liked the look of hers. It was very clean and easy to read. I think my purpose behind this e-portfolio is to use it as a tool to show off the work I have done when eventually applying to grad school. I plan on being a clinical psychologist, and I have a lot of empathy, so I think highlighting the works I’ve done about advocating for others and showing that I have a wide range of experiences in my life that I have written about will prepare me for helping other people. I plan on showcasing my This I Believe Speech as well and my passion blogs. I think my tabs will be, my beliefs, my passions, and my extracurriculars. I will have to look back on some of my pieces from last semester and see if there are any things that I have written that highlight who I am.

Bracelets

I feel like everyone made friendship bracelets with their besties back in middle school. I remember buying all of the embroidery thread in all of the colors and tying knots over and over until I had a bracelet to give to all of my friends. I haven’t thought about making them in a while, but when my roommate, Emily came back from visiting her family over Easter, she brought back with her an entire bag fills with embroidery thread that brought back all of the memories of middle school.

The first bracelet I made was for my boyfriend because it was recently a 6 month anniversary of ours (if that’s even a thing lol). I took his favorite colors, black and blue, and then put a bead with the letter “J” on it. I was using the most basic pattern which is just tying a knot one way and then knotting the strings the other way over and over again until it is long enough to tie off.

This is a diagram I drew to try to depict how you tie the knots. You loop the blue string around the red string and tie a knot, then you tie a knot in the other direction and repeat.

After I finished the bracelet for my boyfriend, I wanted to make an anklet for myself because it is getting closer to summertime and I think that anklets scream summer. However, I wanted to challenge myself so I asked Emily to teach me a different kind of bracelet pattern. She taught me one where you use six strings and make diagonal lines. I think my diagram would be a little too chaotic so I will try to describe it. But basically, you have three colors, two of each, and they are next to each other all lined up. Then you take one of the strings and tie two knots around each of the other ones. Then you pick up a new string and do the same. You end up with a pattern like this one.

I wish I was better at explaining, but if you are interested, just youtube friendship macrame bracelets and there will be tutorials that make a lot more sense.

These are super easy once you get the hang of them and they are a lot of fun to make especially if you are giving them out to friends. The blue one in the picture above ended up being an anklet for my roommate and she is making one for me as well. It will be a fun reminder over the summer of the good times we had crafting with each other this semester. Plus a pop of color is always nice in the summertime!

HUB Crafts pt2

Hi everyone! This past week, the HUB was full of crafting opportunities. I was sent an email at the beginning of last week letting me know that there would be an additional craft pick-up day on Wednesday, our wellness day! I was very excited to say the least. My roommate came back that day, so once she arrived, we went straight to the HUB to pick up our crafts!

Inside the bag were a little ceramic whale pot and a standard flower pot with some paints to decorate. It also contained a bag of soil and seeds so that you could plant some plants. I decided that I was going to paint little flowers on the whale, but I didn’t have a small enough brush to make the details so I ended up mixing together a blue and then adding white polka dots. In order to add the polka dots, I used the end of a pencil eraser and dipped it into the white paint so that I would get perfect circles. I was not steady enough to get perfect circles, but they were still better than what I could do with a brush so I consider it to be a success.

Then I decided to paint the flower pot to look like a watermelon. I had seen someone do it where they make the outside green and the inside red, so I wanted to make it look slightly different because I was too lazy to paint the inside of the pot if I am being honest. I ended up painting about 3/4 of the pot green using a dark bluish-green, a lime green and a white highlight. The remaining fourth, I mixed a pinkish red and added the black seeds so it looks like a little slice of watermelon. Then I wrote on the top “Watermelon” because I wanted to keep messing with it even when I knew I should just leave it alone.

I sadly lost the seeds that came with my craft bag, so I do not have any plants growing, but I am hoping to plant some when I get home!

The crafts did not stop there though, because Friday of last week, there were more crafts! My roommate and I went back to the HUB to pick up our bags. This craft contained a wooden sign that was separated into four sections and a little tray. I painted the sign with a mix of colors on each section to make it less flat and then I was off looking for a four-word quote to write on the sign. I am not the best painter, so I decided to play to my skills and do some calligraphy. The first quote I could think of was “Don’t worry, be happy” and I thought that was fitting because its getting very stressful as we are coming to the end of our semester.

Finally, I had the tray left, but I wasn’t sure how I wanted to decorate it, so I thought I would ask you guys if you had any suggestions for me 🙂

This is what it looks like for reference.

Advocacy Project Idea

For my advocacy project, I am thinking about addressing Penn State Undergraduate students about the importance of checking the information one finds on social media and also considering the source where it comes from. I think this is relevant to my issue brief because I talk about the importance of fact-checking and making sure the information one receives, especially about politics and the civic issues our country is facing so that we can view the information with less biased eyes. I think that I will probably record a speech about it because that what I am best at and also I am comfortable using voicethread and I like that people will be able to see my facial expressions wince we are also supposed to be drawing upon ethos and pathos, but I am open to other ways of presenting this if anyone has an idea of how to better present this for my topic.

After seeing the pictures and reading the captions, I can say that the piece about the domestic violence is art as well as advocacy. I was a little concerned whether it was ethical or not because when Maggie was in the kitchen and Shane was threatening her and restraining her physically, I didn’t know how I felt about the photographer not stepping in, but instead taking pictures. Ultimately, someone called the police and Maggie was kind of okay. I think as long as everyone was consenting to have their pictures taken and then published, it is okay ethically, even if it may not seem like the best option at the moment. I definitely have mixed feelings. I do think that some of those pictures were true art. For example, the picture of Maggie’s side profile in the car as she drove away with kids, I think that was one of the strongest pieces artistically. I also think that it is a good way to advocate for protecting yourself, getting out of abusive situations, and seeking help by showing it is possible even if it isn’t easy.

White Boards!

I feel like 60% of the rooms on my floor have a white board on their door that they will use to decorate or communicate to the rest of the floor. My neighbors, for instance, will ask a question and take a poll of the answers. It’s always fun to walk by and see if people prefer pancakes or waffles or who they think is the craziest person on our floor. Others just have people leave fun comments or doodles. My roommate, Emily, and I have our names on ours and then we will find a funny quote to go with it.

Well this week, Emily went home to celebrate Easter with her family which means that I had total control of the white board. Normally Emily lets me do the writing because it’s something I enjoy and she claims to not have the best handwriting. However, she is always a part of the contents of the board because she is really funny and is good at finding quotes.

But because I had creative freedom, I went to Pinterest to find some inspo. I first started by figuring out which font I wanted our names to be in. I try to switch the font each week to keep things fun, haha not that anyone really pays attention or cares what font is used, but I think it’s fun. In the past, I have done cursive, modern italics, german, and a fun lowercase lettering. So I decided to do an uppercase font using different thicknesses and thinness to add some dimension. Then I went in and added some random floral/ foliage doodles to fill some space.

I then had to look for a quote, so I went back to Pinterest and searched around for a while until I found the perfect one… “Sometimes I talk to myself…then we both laugh”   I thought it was funny and accurate to my week because I’ve been going crazy without Emily. We normally do everything together so I have been bored waiting for her to come back.

This is the final result

I wish that I could’ve done this blog after Wednesday because the HUB is giving out craft kits from 3-5 for the wellness day, and I that would be fun to write about, so I guess stay tuned until then!

I hope that you guys enjoyed the white board and I would love to hear any suggestions on how to spice up the board or if you guys have any ideas I can do!

Drawing Time

Hey guys, so for this week, I decided to be basic and do a very simple craft, doodling! These past couple of weeks, most of my floor came in contact with covid/ tested positive and had to go into isolation. Luckily, my roommate and I were able to avoid being exposed, however, we decided it was best to do some quarantining on our own, so we stayed in our room as much as we could and only left to get food, get tested for covid, or use the bathroom. This meant I was very bored. So after spending countless hours on Tik Tok, I came across this account that showed how to do simple little drawings of cute things.

So I took out my sketch pad and got to drawing. Now if I’m being honest, I am quite terrible at coming up with ideas or just drawing things from my own mind. I am not creative like that at all, but I am fairly good at replicating what someone else has drawn. So this account was perfect for me because the drawings were easy and fun. The first drawing was a picture of a strawberry on a bicycle.

She first started with a simple shape of the berry and then began to add the leaves, limbs, boots, seeds, and face. Then she drew the bicycle starting with the seat and moving down to the wheels and handlebars. After she was done, I took a screenshot (above) and began to draw. After I finished with the drawing, I took some watercolor and made it colorful because I thought it needed some.

As you can see, I copied it as closely as I could and then hung it up on my bulletin board :).

Next, I saw this mushroom cottage scene with little bugs and flowers and a snail who occupies one of the mushroom homes. The tik toker, @bobbiegoods, did a narration of what was going on in the scene as she drew it. I really liked that she did that and it made the process more fun because it is like you are adding characters to your scene. This is what she created…

And this is what I replicated.

Like the last drawing, I decided to add some watercolor to spice it up a little bit.

I would definitely recommend checking out her page if you would like to do some of these drawings. My advice would be that if you use a pencil to sketch out the drawing before going in with a pen, make sure that the pen/marker won’t smear when you go back to erase the lines because that can be very sad. I would also recommend that you make sure the pen you’re using doesn’t run when it comes in contact with water if you plan to use water color because that ends up with a black smeary mess, so I would suggest using a thin tip sharpie because those would bleed with water!

Here is her account if you all want to check it out!

Issue Brief ROUGH draft

Because I changed my topic pretty last minute, I haven’t been able to do too much research. I am aware that this post is more of an outline than a rough draft and am very open to any criticisms or suggestions you all may have.

Polarity in the USA: Is Social Media Helping Or Hindering?

The United States of America is divided. In recent years, the growing tension between the political parties has been exacerbated by the influence of the media, particularly social media. While social media has allowed people to connect and find communities, it has also caused lots of arguments and less than productive conversations. People are trying to justify their side of an issue in 280 characters or less (Twitter) and that is pretty much impossible to do. Starting conversations about the issues in our country is a good thing, but attacking those who don’t agree or see eye to eye is not. If we don’t begin to address the biggest issue we are facing, the division of the American people, by encouraging fact-checking and fostering productive conversations, then our country may not be able to recover.

When did this division begin? The United States should be exactly that – united, however, this has not been the case for quite some time. After the tragedy of September 11, 2001, our country worked together and there was great union within the American people, they bonded together to help those families who were suffering so much and the pride for the country was overwhelming. But, as you continue into the 2000s and leading into the 2010s with the Obama administration, you will begin to see more turmoil as the 2016 election started to unfold. During this time, social media had already taken off and people were starting to express their opinions on the candidates running for office. …(I plan on continuing to do research into some specifics of what platforms of social media were used the most)

Once former President Trump was elected, things only got worse, and then there was a new generation on social media beginning to learn about politics and form their own opinions on issues. Gen Z, the generation who has grown up with social media and the one that can navigate it the best, joined the conversations about the issues the country was facing. While this may seem like a good thing, for the majority, it was not. A lot of this generation gets most of their information about politics from social media, then they will agree and repost, or disagree and join in on the arguments in the comments. The reposting and arguing is not the main issue, it is what they are arguing about. The issue with social media is there is not a lot of fact-checking or providing sources, so the information being passed around and shared, may not even be correct at all. With so many young impressionable minds now being exposed to so much false information, this next generation of Americans is not going to be able to form opinions based on the facts.

(Here I plan to suggest how we should go about teaching social media literacy in schools, so we know how to avoid falling for false information and begin to challenge what is being read on the internet. Teaching the next generation may begin to stop the division from continuing, but more still needs to be addressed for those who already formed their opinions and refuse to see the other side to issues.)

(Next, I am going to suggest that different platforms begin to adopt fact-checking as a form of keeping the user accountable for the information they are putting out onto the platform.)

(I plan to talk about how social media can be a frightening place for those who want to express their opinions on a topic but are scared of being attacked or “canceled” for what they want to say. I will also be introducing cancel culture as a term that has taken over the internet recently and how it is detrimental to having productive conversations. )

I know that there is still a lot of work that needs to be done, and I plan on dedicating this weekend to doing some more research and finding sources to add to this paper, again I would really appreciate any suggestions you all may have 🙂

Issue Brief Intro

I have decided to go in a different direction than I was originally planning because I wanted to continue the theme of what I have been writing about in my civic issue blogs. My new topic is to discuss the issue of polarization in our country because of media.

The United States of America has never been more divided. If we don’t begin to address the biggest issue we are facing, the division of the American people, then our country will not be able to recover.

Civic Issue 3/25

The civic issue that I have been discussing is polarity in politics in our country. In my first civic issues blog, I discussed how news channels have been showing biased for quite some time and are making it difficult to find the truth in news. For this blog, I want to take it a step further into what may be more applicable for a college student which is getting information from social media.

I think it is safe to say that many teenagers get their news and political influences from both their parents and social media, however, once you go off to school, you no longer hear the lectures your parents give you when they hear something they disagree with, so you are getting the majority of your news from places like Twitter and Instagram. While social media has made sharing news quick and easy, it can also be very biased, which is dangerous when one is trying to remain objective. But even more so, it can be a scary place.

Because of the times and how opinionated everyone seems to be about everything, navigating social media can be intimidating and even downright scary at some times. People tend to be cruder and more open when they are arguing with a stranger over the internet than they might be in person when they are discussing a certain policy or stance, and someone who may just have been trying to express their side or view may be attacked solely because they tried to be informative. Everyone seems to believe that they know best and many are not scared to let you know.

So is social media good or bad when it is seen as a source for news? Well, the answer to that question is unclear. Like I have said in a previous post, it is very easy to find a group and pigeonhole yourself into only seeing the news that you want to see. Social media’s algorithms have gotten very efficient at showing you the posts that are like those you have spent reading in past or posts that you have liked. This makes it a little too easy to begin to see only one side of a discussion. It also makes it more alarming when you do come across a post that is not in alignment with what you are used to. This comes to the polarization part of social media and this is where conflicts and arguments are hashed out quite rudely in the comments section.

There is also such thing as “fake news” or news that just isn’t true. On social media, it can be hard to find the source of the information and most people are not sitting on their phone fact-checking everything they read on a social media platform, but rather reading it and taking it as completely true. This becomes an issue when there is more than one side to that “fact” or if that “fact” has been taken out of context and twisted to mean something else. This fake news can be dangerous when the majority of the people reading it are young adults who are deciding what political party they want to affiliate with. If they aren’t receiving the correct information, they may think they are making informed decisions, when really they are not.

Another issue with social media is that it can make people scared to speak up. We live in an age where cancel culture is a thing. Cancel culture is “the phenomenon of promoting the “canceling” of people, brands and even shows and movies due to what some consider to be offensive or problematic remarks or ideologies” (New York Post). Cancel culture has made people terrified to say or do something that may not be politically correct. For example, my roommate is in a gender and race women’s studies class. As a cis, straight, white female, she is constantly scared to speak in class due to possibly be scrutinized for misunderstanding something and then being “canceled” because of it. This type of thing happens all of the time on social media and it can prohibit people from learning and/or making a mistake because they are too scared of what people might assume about them.

While there are good sides to social media, like connecting with a younger audience, spreading information quickly and easily, and allowing people to express their opinions, it needs to be something we are aware can get out of control quite quickly.
