As a first-year student at PSU, there are many things I hope to do in my time here. Off the top of my head, I know that one thing I can’t wait to do is make some new friends for the journey. In addition, just like any other student, I can’t wait to cheer my throat out for the Nittany Lions. Lastly, college is about opening up and getting out of your comfort zone, therefore I’m excited to just enjoy the ride.
With any expedition comes fearfulness. I mean coming from a cool cozy life in high school, how the heck do I study for a college course? What even is studying? Why do it now if I didn’t before? Even if I study how will I succeed at the college level? Not to mention money. Every vacation or adventure costs something. How will I pay for it? I guess I’ve got to send out those applications for the creamery.
On the topic of high school, Let’s talk about the things I want to bring with me and the things I want to leave behind. The first thing left at home should be my studying habits. They pretty much were non-existent. Another big thing I should try to rework Is my time management, a.k.a. procrastination. That’s a biggie for me, but as of now, I seem to be ok along those lines. Finally, I’m gonna be honest here, I wanna be smart. Somebody told me way back when that reading is kind of good for that. I mean I guess it sort of makes sense. Hey, at least while I’m reading I’ll look like I know what I’m talking about.
So get this. I’m at this really big university, and I mean huge. I’m thinking that it wouldn’t be such a bad idea to make the most of it. I’m leaning towards possibly joining ( don’t worry I’m not going to say frat) an I.M. sport or for you non-Penn staters that’s an intermural sport. In addition, THON sounds pretty fun so I’ll definitely have to check that out. I have also heard there are some pretty cool clubs on campus and quite abundant might I add. Once again not a bad idea.
On a finishing note, I’d like to set three goals, one for the first semester, another for the first year and lastly for my four years here. This semester B+’s sound like a good place for me to start out, at least. The first year a 3.5 would be kind of nice. For the end of my four years, ideally walking out of the BJC with an Architecture degree would be quite the dream, however, I’d really just like to have found myself along the way.
I think if you PACE yourself and put academics first (for the first year), then gradually add some social activities ( i.e. dare I say it…frat), you will find the kind of success that is needed for the competitive architecture degree. Agree? Best of luck.
