Today my class experienced the Penn State library. I say experienced because, as I learned today it, not just a building, but rather a resource.
We began our tour at a set of revolving doors a top a set of beautiful stairs leading in.. Once inside we were introduced to all of the many tools available for us by a lovely woman named Cheryl. Cheryl navigated us through mazes of computer desks and around glass walls encompassing mini presentation rooms. She even showed us the mighty mountain of 3D printers. Finally completing our hike, we rested in a small cave with computers and whiteboards known as a classroom.
Inside the classroom, we learned about the thousands of databases offered to us by Penn State, including a few familiar ones from high school. These databases seem to be a lot more useful than just your simple google search. For example, we learned how to narrow our search down using each database. “And” is more inclusive and “or” is broader. All this was meant to give us an idea of what we can expect to need as a student going through classes. In particular, the fact that we can go back as far as media in the 80’s really excited me to want to use it and see how far we come in the news, or in fact how much we’ve regressed.
In all, leaving the library left me with a lasting impression of Penn State. As I walked through the large corridors and past the hardworking students typing away on their laptops, I realized that this place is special. When I opened the doors and looked out on the Pasquarella center I felt a sense of peace and belonging. This college is my new home and I’m here to take full advantage of all its amenities
