San Francsico, California

San Francisco Travel Guide | Marriott Bonvoy Traveler

This week we’re moving to the west coast! For all of you city people at heart, San Francisco is an amazing choice where culture, booming business, and commercial life intertwines. San Francisco lies on the coast of central California and is home to 4.7 million residents, making it the 17th most populated city in the United States! Different from the Pennsylvanian mountains, San Francisco holds a lovely mild climate almost year-round. In the summer, the city may feel a little colder than others due to cool currents from the Pacific Ocean, but in the winter 50-60 degree weather has never felt so good!

One of the most exciting things about San Francisco is the seemingly endless list of things to do. First, the city itself has so much to offer. The Golden Gate Bridge is a must-see that allows visitors and residents alike to enjoy panoramic views of San Francisco on either foot, bike, or car! Additionally, the city is rich in culture. In fact, nothing quite screams “San Francisco” as cable cars. Getting around the city has never been more fun! Other highlights of the city include Alcatraz Island and Fisherman’s Wharf which offer one-of-a-kind experiences and make for a great photo-op. However, if you are more of an outdoorsy person, don’t be alarmed, San Fran has its fair share of hiking trails, parks, and overlooks to feed your fix!

Another one of the best things about living in San Francisco is the abundance and diversity of neighborhoods within the city. In fact, you might notice walking the streets that over 112 languages are spoken here. There truly is a place for everyone. Looking to start a family? Noe Valley and Cole Valley are both family-friendly locations. Want to move here after college? The Mission District is the epitome of a fresh-hip area with vibrant coffee shops, live music, and nightlife. Looking for water views or close beaches? Try the Marina District or Sunset District. No matter where you are though, the city is extremely walkable and has greenery and landscape peaking around almost every corner. And I don’t know about you, but my dog is literally like my best friend. To make San Francisco that much better, it is extremely pet friendly and even has more dogs than kids living there!

Personally, I believe that living in San Francisco is especially appealing for younger individuals, specifically those between their 20s and 40s. This means that job opportunity is very important. San Francisco is unarguably one of the best cities for networking and making connections in your industry. The tech industry in specific is experiencing a huge boom and looking for many new employees to keep up with its advancements.

So how could one pass a place like this up? Money. San Fransico is very expensive. The average cost of rent for a one-bedroom apartment is a whopping $3,500 a month and the median house price is $1.3 million. Not only is rent a huge economic drain but the cost of living itself such as food, attractions, and other everyday expenses are a lot higher than most cities.

While San Francisco is quite expensive, I think it would be a dream for anyone to live in the city for at least a few years of their lives!

My family took a trip to San Francisco when I was little but I don’t really remember much of it, so it is definitely a place that I want to visit again soon. It’s so picturesque and has such a variety of different things to do and experience. It’s also really nice that the city is so walkable and family-friendly. Like you mentioned, though, the cost of living is outrageously high and unfortunately probably makes it a better place to visit than to live.

I think one of the biggest deterring factors of the West Coast for me is the money factor. I find it hard to see myself settling there, especially as someone going into a Tech field. You may question why, because California is home to “Silicon Valley”, but the high costs of living and running a business has been steering Tech companies away from the area. For instance, Elon Musk has moved his Tesla company out of Silicon Valley and into Texas because it saves the company a lot more money. However, I bet California is a lovely place to live despite the money factor.

In the first half of your post, you seriously had me considering the West Coast for the first time ever but the cost definitely turns me away. I think San Francisco sounds like a really cool place to live, especially when younger like you said, but I honestly would probably only go for a long vacation or for a summer. Maybe when looking for summer internships or something similar I might look at San Francisco just to experience all of these neat things you listed without a long-term commitment.
