This blog has mostly become about travel and my favorite places/ adventures. So, I thought I would end it on one of my favorite places I’ve been, which is Prague, Czech Republic. My family went last year since my brother was studying abroad there and we wanted to visit him. It was my first time going to Europe, which made the trip really exciting.
When we got there, it was too early to check into our hotel room, so we left our bags with the hotel and met up with my brother. We walked around for a few hours, but the jet lag was hitting hard and we felt sluggish. The first day wasn’t too exciting since we didn’t get to do much besides eat dinner and walk around. However, the next day was my favorite day. My brother had class, so my parents and I went up to the castle. We got to see the changing of the guards, which was pretty cool, and we toured the actual castle. Afterwards, we got trdelniks- a pastry with cinnamon and sugar. They’re all over Prague and honestly might have been the highlight of the trip. After the castle, my brother met us for a boat cruise tour. His friends and roommate’s families came at the same time as us to visit, so they also came on the tour. Everyone was friendly, the tour was interesting, and the views were amazing. The rest of the trip was filled with more walking around the city and trying different restaurants.
Since we were in Europe, we wanted to go to more places besides Prague, so we decided to go to Vienna for three days.We took the train there since it was only three hours away and the ride was very scenic. We went to some museums and did a walking tour of the city. However, the trip had a bump in the road. Our second day there, my dad fell and ended up breaking his toe. My mom took him to the hospital and left me and my brother in the hotel. We were actually sleeping when it happened, so we had to stay back. We weren’t sure what to do besides go eat lunch. We ended up at a café down the street, but it turned out to be a smoking café. My brother and I didn’t know where else to go so we suffered through the smoke while eating wiener schnitzel. My parents came back shortly after with my dad in a cast. Although injured, my dad still wanted to do things. We ended up on a walking Hitler tour, which was a tour of the city showing where Hitler gave famous speeches, lived, ate, and wrote. I wasn’t exactly too excited for this activity, but it ended up being super interesting. My dad also surprisingly managed to walk the entire time.
We went back to Prague for the remaining few days of the trip- something that I was happy about. Vienna was a great city, but I thought Prague was more charming. Plus, my dad’s hospital trip kind of put a damper on the little time we had there. Our last night in Prague, we went to the rooftop of a building called the Dancing House. The architecture of it was amazing- it looks like it’s twisted. We sat up on the rooftop, which is also a bar, and we got to see a really gorgeous view of the city. Ultimately, I loved my time in Prague and I wish to go back someday.
Hi Katie,
I am happy to hear that you had such a great time in Prague! The Dancing House looks really cool from the picture, and I want to see it in person now. I am sorry to hear about the setback you had in Vienna, but am glad that you still got to explore some of the city. While I have never been to Europe at all (other than to the airports for connecting flights), I hope to visit many of the places there one day. I will definitely put Prague as one of the top places to visit and will have to try the trdelniks there after reading your post!
