For my advocacy project, I have a few ideas as to the topics I am interested in doing. One idea I have is decreasing recidivism rates in the city where I am from, Providence, Rhode Island. This would involve designing and strengthening programs to help those recently released from prison get a job and establish a stable lifestyle. The audience for this topic would be those in the city who have just been released from prison. Another idea I have for a topic is making prisons in my hometown, Providence, safer and a more humane environment for prisoners. This would involve modifying prison administration and policies in the prison. I could focus on a specific prison in the city. The audience for this topic would be both the prisoners and prison staff in the prison.
I think that these photos are a piece of advocacy. They represent a deep and influential topic, domestic abuse. They are first hand documentation of a topic that affects so many Americans on a daily basis. Therefore, in my opinion they are a piece of advocacy. Ultimately, I do not think that this was ethical. The photographer witnessed the abuse without trying to step in or call the police. In my opinion, this was not an ethical choice because the woman was clearly in danger and vulnerable with no help. The threat was immediate and therefore I believe the photographer should have intervened in some way whether that was getting involved first hand or calling the police.
I really like your idea for the project. I could definitely see the appeal of making the project personalized by discussing a town that is pretty close to you. I believe this could really enhance your topic to be more persuasive to the audience.
I agree that the piece is definitely an advocacy piece as it seems like a way for the writer to grow suppport for the act mentioned at the end. I also agree that this may have not been the most ethical situation as it probably would have been better to intervene before anyone got hurt.
Personally, I really like the first topic you mentioned. The second idea is intriguing, but I feel there may be alot of drawbacks and opposition in carrying out a solution. You will have numerous examples of pathos as you grew up in this situation and can describe it vividly.
I agree with your point of view. The fact that this situation has been documented and shared proves this is a piece of advocacy. I also agree that this is unethical. Not just because they could have intervened earlier but showing pictures of the victims could have negative results for them and their families.
