The Horror Movie Phenomena

Since Halloween is approaching and spooky season is in full swing, there needs to be a blog about horror and Halloween films. Even if you are not a fan of these types of movies, it is undeniable that many people have an interest in these types of films. What exactly is it though about these movies that fascinates people so much? I mean, they are about some of human being’s worse nightmares and display gruesome events. Some of the more common and iconic horror films include the Halloween franchise and Nightmare on Elm Street to name a few. Although there is no definite reason as to why horror movies are a cultural phenomena, there are some potential reasons as to why they are very popular.

For one, there is the adrenaline rush that viewers get from watching these films. This adrenaline can be seen as a negative aspect because of the sense of fear that it causes, but for many it is exciting. Even though the situation the audience is watching is one that they would not want to be in themselves, it sparks a sense of thrill that many people can have in a non-dangerous situation. This can be applied to the thrill of a roller coaster or going to a haunted house as people know they are safe, but experience the thrill of being in a “dangerous” scenario. Nevertheless, there can be a different reaction to the these films as well.

Another possible reason for the love of horror films is the sense of humor that people get from these films. Now before you take this the wrong way, let me explain. There is no humor in the gruesome scenes that many horror movies depict, however, there is usually “stupid” actions done by characters that people would never do in a real life situation. This goes for the “Don’t go in the basement” or ” Why would she open the door?” kind of situations. This sense of stupidity in a dangerous, yet fictional, situation can be a source of humor for some. This can be seen not only in true horror movies, but also in films like Scary Movie which is aimed at being funny. Even though this is usually not the case for most, this is still one part of these films that draw people in.

A final potential reason for horror movies being such a popular craze during this time is the social aspect. Usually people do not watch horror movies by themselves and are with a group of friends. The thrill and humor that can be evoked through these films makes watching them with a group better as it sparks an engaging conversation, even if it is one making fun of the silly actions of the characters. This time with friends is one that all people want to enjoy and even though some members of the group may not like the film, the collaborative nature that these scary films provide can be a reason for the excitement regarding these films.

  1. This is a great analysis of the psychology surrounding horror movies. Personally, I do not enjoy the genre, but the points you brought up about why some people do were interesting to consider. I also think that there is a time factor in why people watch horror movies, as evident in you feeling the need to mention them this time of year.

  2. I thought your 3 analytical evaluations on why horror movies are so popular were very interesting. The most interesting was the humor aspect which many people I feel do not always realize in horror movies but after seeing your analysis on it I realized how common it was. Many horror movies have characters who make silly mistakes and do things that are plain dumb and questionable. I think that this was very interesting to look at how this could be an appeal and reason for liking horror movies.
