You may have noticed the historical marker in front of the Law School, but what do you know about it or other historical markers scattered around Carlisle and the rest of the state?
The Pennsylvania Historical Marker Program is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission. According to the Program’s website, the historical markers are designed “to capture the memory of people, places, events and innovations that have affected the lives of Pennsylvanians over the centuries since William Penn founded his Commonwealth.” There are over 2,000 historical markers across the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania Historical Marker Program’s website contains a searchable database of all of the historical markers in the Commonwealth. You can search the database by keyword, county and/or category. The advanced search feature allows you to search by marker title, location, and/or marker text, in addition to county and/or category. The displayed search results include the date the marker was dedicated, the location and GPS coordinates of the marker, and the marker’s text.
For those desiring to make a road trip to view historical markers, there is even a searchable mobile site, which detects and displays historical markers based on your current location in either list or map format. The mobile site is part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History, a site dedicated to historical trails in the Commonwealth for history buffs to explore. All of the trails included on the Pennsylvania Trails of History website are available in mobile format as well.
