Did You Know????

October 14, 2016 by Judy L Swarthout

heinonlineDid you know that faculty and students at Dickinson Law have free access to U.S. Reports v.1–563?  Additionally, the United States Supreme Court Preliminary Prints (Advance Sheets) through January, 2012, and the current United States Supreme Court Slip Opinions are also available via HeinOnline? All three titles are provided in PDF format, and can either be printed or downloaded.

In addition to being able to access the current United States Supreme Court Slip Opinions, HeinOnline also provides audio access to a large number of the oral arguments associated with the Slip Opinions.

Accessing these materials requires a quick visit to the Law Library’s website and a click on the link to HeinOnline. Once you are there, you will notice that all of the HeinOnline libraries are listed in alphabetical order by subject. Scroll down the list to United States Supreme Court Library.

Take a look at HeinOnline — I think you will be surprised at what you will find.

Summer Access to Lexis, Bloomberg Law, Westlaw

May 24, 2016 by Judy L Swarthout

Dickinson_Law_LibraryInformation on summer access to Lexis, Bloomberg Law, and Westlaw for members of the Classes of 2017 & 2018:

LEXIS has no restrictions on use over the summer, and you do not have to do anything to extend your password.

BLOOMBERG LAW has no restrictions on use over the summer, and you do not have to do anything to extend your password.

WESTLAW requires that you extend your password for the summer to have full access to Westlaw. If you don’t extend your password, you will only have access to Westlaw for 10 hours in June and 10 hours in July.

WESTLAW Summer password extension is available only if a student has a permissible academic use for the password this summer (a summer associate position is not considered a permissible use).  Permissible uses include:

  • Summer classes / study abroad
  • Law review and journal
  • Moot court
  • Research assistant positions
  • Unpaid internships / externships — for which you will receive class credit

Access for the Class of 2016 (May Graduates):

LEXIS provides full access to students graduating in May 2016 for six months through the Lexis Law School Graduate Program. Graduates working for a public interest organization may sign up for the Lexis ASPIRE Program, which permits job-related access to Lexis Advance for the duration of the public interest work.

BLOOMBERG LAW allows access to graduating students for six months after graduation. You do not need to do anything to extend your access.

WESTLAW allows graduating students to extend access while studying for the bar by registering for its Grad Program. Registered May graduates will retain access to Westlaw for a limited number of hours through November. Graduates will also retain access to a number of career-related databases for 18 months following graduation.

Introducing Law.com

March 11, 2016 by Judy L Swarthout

The Law Library has recently added Law.com to its list of legal database subscriptions.  It is a product of American Legal Media, the publisher of American Lawyer, National Law Journal and New Jersey Law Journal — to name just a few.  (A complete list is below.)

The site is divided into four large subject areas:  Practice Area, Legal Industry, Rankings and Resources.   Students and faculty can access the database at www.law.com, or by going to the H. Laddie Montague Law Library’s list of Law Databases A-Z.

Dickinson Law faculty can request an account to receive the latest issue of one or more of the legal publications directly in your inbox.  Contact Judy Swarthout at jsx2@psu.edu to request an account.
