The Keim Lab at Penn State

An experimental 2D disordered solid, and its rearrangements under deformation.

Our lab is focused on memory, self-organization, and other non-equilibrium behaviors of soft materials under deformation and driving. This includes experimental studies of the mechanisms of plasticity in disordered solids, of pinned liquid interfaces, and of suspensions of swimming organisms. One major interest of our lab is how a wide array of materials can be probed, understood, and manipulated using generic principles of memory formation: storing, processing, and recalling inputs.

Our work is supported in part by the Human Frontier Science Program, grant RGP0017/2021.
