Advancing scholarship in the theory and praxis of technology-based social entrepreneurship is essential to mainstream this emerging field and engage more faculty and students, with the ultimate objective of fostering social enterprise. Towards that goal, I conduct research in several areas under the broad umbrella of Humanitarian Engineering and Social Entrepreneurship. Research areas (and resulting publications) encompass affordable design, design thinking, social entrepreneurship theory and pedagogy, systems thinking, Food Value Chains (FVCs), post-harvest technologies, telemedicine systems, cellphones, social networks & trust, indigenous knowledge systems, development ethics, grassroots diplomacy, educational technologies, educational assessment tools, women in engineering, and informal lending systems!
Students, especially undergraduates, are mentored to publish their original work in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Engaging students in original, institution-approved, and publishable research can bolster their learning while strengthening the venture-creation process. My students have presented papers and participated in panels at the annual conference of the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA), the IEEE Global Humanitarian Technology Conference, the National Engagement Scholarship Conference, American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Conference, Unite for Sight, Clinton Global Initiative, etc.
