This weeks romantic comedy is “50 First Dates” starring two of my favorite actors, Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler. This movie is centered around Lucy Whitmore, played by Drew Barrymore, and her memory that resets everyday. She got in a car crash with her father, and following the accident relives the day before the accident everyday. Her father and brother reenact the same day everyday with her, following a never ending script. One day, Henry Roth, played by Adam Sandler, comes to the restaurant that Lucy eats at everyday. He watches her make a waffle house and decides to talk to her, he introduces himself and they start a conversation, then he leaves. The next day Henry returns to the restaurant to find Lucy making another waffle house, however, when he speaks to her she shows no recollection of ever meeting him. Instead, she seems freaked out that he is continuing to be so adamant about talking to her. He follows her home the next day where her father and brother try to scare him off, saying she’ll never remember him anyway.
Instead of being scared off it makes Henry more determined, everyday he begins coming up with new and creative ways to introduce himself to Lucy. Such as pretending to get kidnapped or saving a penguin from getting run over. Each new interaction and “first date” causes Henry to fall more and more in love with Lucy. In the end, we find Lucy and Henry living on a boat with their daughter. Every morning Lucy wakes up to a video of Henry explaining the accident. He tells her how they fell in love, had a daughter, and are living happily together. She is able to come to terms with the accident everyday, instead of pretending it never happened, she’s able to move on.
Swoonability 8/10: I loved Adam Sandler’s character in this movie, I took 2 points off because I don’t find Adam Sandler attractive, but his perseverance in getting Lucy to fall in love with him is beautiful. Instead of choosing to get over her, he makes it his mission to make her happy and live a good life and this movie makes me smile every time.
Comedy 10/10: Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore never fail to make me laugh. Their interactions everyday in the movie are funny and creative every time. Such as Lucy chasing Henry’s friend with a baseball bat when he pretends to get robbed, or the interactions between Sue, the restaurant owner and Henry when she threatens to kill him if he does not stay away from Lucy. The movie never fails to cheer me up and make me laugh.
Overall 10/10: This movie will never get old, it is the perfect combination of romance and comedy that keeps you entertained and invested in their relationship. It also makes you think about what you would do if someone you loved forgot you everyday, and you had to make them remember. I will always love this movie and if I could recommend only one for you, this movie would be it.
I’ll be totally honest with you, I had absolutely no idea what this movie was about before reading your blog. This movie actually sounds really cute, and I also love older Adam Sandler movies, so I’ll have to add this to my ever-growing list!
Usually I am a huge fan of rom coms, but I honestly was not a massive fan of this movie personally. Adam Sandler is a good actor, and so is Drew Barrymore, but I only thought the movie was okay.
