Now I know what you’re all thinking. Does the movie have Brad Pitt in it? And I will tell you that yes, it does. It also includes Robert Redford. This movie is truly phenomenal in my eyes, so I couldn’t recommend it more.

So the plot of this movie is amazing. It is one of those movies that is told by someone else. What I mean by this is that Nathan Muir (Robert Redford), attempting to retire from the CIA, is being questioned about his former trainee, Tom Bishop (Brad Pitt). Bishop has been captured by the Chinese, and they are trying to figure out if the CIA is required to rescue Bishop. If Bishop disobeyed orders then they don’t need to rescue him.

 

The only problem with this is that Muir loved Bishop. The film never goes out and says this, but it is clear when Muir postpones his retirement for a week to help. The CIA does not like Muir. He is sneaky, and he is really really good. He is constantly going out of his way while breaking the law to help Bishop.

 

During the interrogation of Muir, he recounts all the times he spent with Bishop. He tells how he met him, where they went, what they did, and so much more. What Muir knows is that Bishop did go against orders, so technically the CIA should let the Chinese execute him. Muir does not want this to happen even one bit. Therefore, he has to be super shifty to try and save his friend. He knows the real reason why Bishop went against orders, and he and I both think that they are honorable.

 

At this point, I’m betting you’re probably confused why this is my favorite movie. Here is a little background. My dad was a History major at Harvard, so this man talks about history All. Day. Long. I either had to learn to like history or be annoyed every time he spoke. Because of this, I am a lowkey history nerd. While I do not enjoy history classes per say, I love learning about history.

 

Now, this movie is completely fiction, so it is not technically history, but it does involve a little bit of the Vietnam War and other historical events. Also, who doesn’t enjoy a good war movie?

 

If you haven’t seen this movie, I would definitely watch it.

If you have seen this movie, you know how sneaky Muir is. One of my favorite characters is Muir’s assistant. She is painstakingly loyal to Muir which is really cool. She also breaks a couple of laws. However, the moment I knew this movie was my favorite was at the end. The operation that Muir puts together to save Bishop and his girl is called “Operation Dinner Out.” If you’ve seen this movie, you know the meaning behind this which is ADORABLE.

I am really excited for this movie review because this week I decided to ask MY SISTER what her favorite movie is!! My sister is 17 years old. She is a total goofball. Her hobbies also include eating bread as well as stealing my clothes out of my closet. She is much more fashionable than me and wants to go to art school. If she isn’t drawing, she is probably running. She is a junior in high school who is a phenomenal runner. She trains for and wins marathons. I texted her on Wednesday, and she declared that her favorite movie is She’s the Man. I trained her well. Although this movie does not have Brad Pitt, it does have Channing Tatum. Next to Brad Pitt, Channing Tatum is pretty amazing. I would recommend this movie solely because he is in it. Also, Amanda Bynes is in it before she went a lil nuts, so that’s cool too.

A short summary of this movie. Viola is a soccer super star. However, when her school cuts her soccer team, she is left without a team to play for. Like every sexist school, the school kept the boys team. Viola asks to join the boys team, but the coach and school says no. Viola’s boyfriend is also the star of the boyfriend, but when he refuses to let her play or even acknowledge that she is a good player, she dumps him.

 

Viola’s twin brother Sebastian technically goes to a prep school that rivals Viola’s school. He goes to a different school because he was kicked out of the other one. Sebastian has no plans on going to this new school and instead goes to London to play in his band. Viola then dresses like her brother and heads off to her brother’s school and calls herself Sebastian. There she earns herself a spot on the boy’s soccer team. She is trying to prove to herself and to others that girls can keep up with the boys.

 

If you don’t like soccer, do not worry. There are so many love triangles in this movie. As the cover suggests, everyone is into someone else. Viola starts crushing on her roommate, aka Channing Tatum, who is also on the soccer team. Two problems with that: Viola is a boy with him, and he likes someone else. The girl that Channing Tatum likes is in love with Sebastian, except for it isn’t Sebastian. It is Viola. Lastly, there is Monique who is Sebastian’s real girlfriend. Viola has to avoid her at all costs because she will know that it is actually Viola.

 

Like any good sport’s movie, the movie ends with an epic soccer game in which all the characters are thrown together.

 

Overall, the movie is really good. Even though it stars Amanda Bynes, it is a funny, witty, romantic, sports movie. I would recommend it to both boys and girls as well as soccer and non soccer players.

This week I asked someone very special to me for his favorite movie. I asked MY LITTLE BROTHER!!! My little brother (who FYI is 16 so he isn’t actually little) is three inches taller than me and plays video games seemingly all day long. He’s definitely the only person who does that, right guys? To understand the importance of my asking my little brother, I have to do a little storytelling of my life.

I moved out of my house when I was 16 years old and I had little to no contact with my parents for about two years. However, I didn’t want my little brother to think that my problems with my parents meant I wasn’t his big sister anymore. So I did what any sister would do, and I started a tradition. Once a month, I would pick him up and take him to see a movie. One of the movies that I took him to see was Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I was very happy to hear that this was tied for his favorite movie with none other than Guardians of the Galaxy. I am so happy that I got to take him to go see his favorite movie, so to be honest, this review might be a little bias. Also, I am going to review the first one just because I know it better, and frankly, I think it was a better movie, but I did not actually take Peter (that’s my brother) to see the first one.

This is a very old picture of my brother, sister, and me because he refuses to take pictures. He is in 8^th grade in this picture and now he is in 10^th. Also, he is a very good at orchestra. I stole the second picture from his Instagram, so that picture is recent.

So a little summary of this movie. The main character, Peter (not my brother) Quill, played by the handsome Chris Pratt, is forced to team up with a bunch of rogue space people/beings/fighters? because he stole an orb that the villain wanted. His team consists of a tree named Groot (my favorite character) played by Vin Diesel♥, a raccoon named Rocket, a large man named Drax, and the villain’s daughter (I think) Gamora.

 

If you can’t tell by now, action movies aren’t really my thing for the most part, so I apologize if I am not doing this movie justice.

 

One of the greatest, possibly the greatest, parts of this movie is the soundtrack. It has an unbelievably good soundtrack. It consists of Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling,” Raspberries’s “Go All the Way,” Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky,” 10CC’s “I’m Not in Love,” and so many other fantastic songs. I highly encourage you to listen to Peter’s mixtape “Awesome Mix Vol. 1” while doing homework. It is a great playlist.

 

Overall, I’m not going to say that much more about this movie because I highly encourage you to go watch it with your siblings. And while you are at it, tell them how much you love and care about them. Have a great weekend everybody.

I have to admit that each week it is a challenge to pick a movie as there are so many to choose from. For this reason, I am altering how I pick my movies. I have decided that I will no longer be in control of who picks the movies. Instead I will ask my close friends for their favorite movies and if I have never seen it, I will watch it and give my opinion.  If I have seen it, I will re-watch it to remember it better. However, if I feel I know the movie, I will just go right to reviewing it.

 

So, this week, I asked my boy Nick what his favorite movie is. And his answer was… The Princess Bride. Great choice. The Princess Bride is a classic that every person should see.

So, a little summary of this movie. A country girl named Buttercup falls in love with the farm boy Wesley. However, in order to make the money they need to get married, he goes off. Buttercup receives news of his death at the hand of a pirate. Meanwhile, the Prince of the land chooses to marry Buttercup and she reluctantly agrees. However, she is kidnapped by three men when out riding one day. These three men all have one trait that makes them stand out. One is a master swordsman. One has brute strength. And the other is a master of the mind. However, their kidnapping plans go awry when a strange man wearing all black follows them. To find out what happens next, you’ll just have to watch the movie.

 

 

STOP HERE IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE MOVIE

 

What I really like about this movie is that it is satirical. It pokes fun at story tales. The entire movie is actually just a grandfather reading a story to his sick grandson. Throughout the film, the kid interjects his thoughts. These thoughts are usually very comical and come right at key moments. For example, SPOILER, when Wesley and Buttercup have their big romantic kissing scene at the end, the kid complains about the kissing. This is very comical because the audience is so invested in the story they forget that it is not real. But right as the kiss is coming BAM! The audience is brought back to reality because of this little boy’s aversion to kissing.

 

One of my favorite characters of this movie is obviously Inigo Montoya. You’ve probably heard the famous line, “Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.” It is repeated throughout the movie, so the audience has it memorized by the last time it is being said, which is when, in fact, the man dies.

 

This movie really is worth watching. It has romance, adventure, and comedy so there is something in it for everyone. I hope you guys enjoy this movie.

For my next movie, I have decided to go with a classic: Cars. Now, I want to be very clear before I start, the opinions I tell about this movie do not attain to the second and third movies which are obviously not as good.

Quick summary: A rookie race car driver, Lightning McQueen, finds himself in a three-way race for the Piston Cup, something he has dreamed of his entire life. But after getting lost on the way, he finds himself in an unlikely place: Radiator Springs. Here he learns so much more about racing, friendship, and life than he ever could have elsewhere.

What is not good about the movie Cars? It has a great cast, great plot, great soundtrack, and that classic Pixar feel to it. Let’s start with cast. I know that I say I like a lot of actors, but Owen Wilson is really great in this movie. Even though he is only a voice actor, he is a large part of why this movie is so successful. Also, fun Owen Wilson fact I saw on the internet:  Owen Wilson has such a distinct voice, if I told you to say, “Oh wow,” in his voice, you could. You just tried it and found out that I’m right, didn’t you? Another lovable character comes in the form of an unlikely friend for Lightning McQueen named Mator. Goofy, fun, and at times a little dumb, he teaches McQueen about friendship. Sally, the love interest, also teaches McQueen kindness, something he was pretty terrible at before he showed up to the little town. Perhaps my favorite character, Doc Hudson teaches McQueen about racing. It is this life lesson that drives the movie to its heartfelt ending, which I won’t spoil for you.

If you hear the song, “Life is a Highway,” and don’t immediately think of this movie, there might be something wrong with you. This movie has such an incredible soundtrack, and it might be the reason I think the second and third movies are not as good. “Real Gone,” “Route 66,” and “Sh-Boom” are all classic songs that blend into the movie perfectly.

Pixar is a multi-billion-dollar company in Disney, and they are for a reason. I would argue that Cars is one of the original Pixar films of our generation that allowed it to have the success it had. This movie is iconic. I know the ending, but I still tear up at the end every time without fail. This is the sign of a quality movie. Pixar is underrated in my mind. Disney is very associated with princesses for the most part, but Pixar really focuses on having an incredible message, and Cars is a great example of this. I really can’t recommend this movie enough. It is heartwarming as well as funny. And if I haven’t said this before, Owen Wilson is in it. Not saying that should sway your opinion (but it should ☺︎).

If you Liked this Movie, You’d Like: Tron, 21 Jump Street, Spy Kids 3: Game Over, Now You See Me

Nerve is one of my favorite movies of all time. The dynamic duo, Emma Roberts and Dave Franco, have great chemistry on set. That mixed with an on the edge of your seat plot produces a great movie. The basic plot of this movie is that Vee, played by Emma Roberts, is tired of hiding in her best friend’s shadow. So, when an exciting, 24 hour long online game starts, she chooses to play instead of watch. The game works like this. Watchers give players tasks to do throughout New York City, and then the players have a small amount of time to do that task. If they complete the task, the players get a monetary prize as well as the ability to stay in the game. If you fail a task, you are out of the game. The game continues until there is only one person left. Early in the game, Vee teams up with Ian, Dave Franco’s character. Together they go far enough into the game to learn its real secrets.

When I first watched this movie, I was very reluctant. I told my best friend I didn’t want to watch it because it seemed predictable and cheesy. Never have I been more wrong about a movie. I was on the edge of my seat the entire movie. When I thought something was going to happen, I was always dead wrong. This movie is so exciting to watch. If you like movies that keep you entranced the entire time, this is a great movie for you.

 

 

SMALL SPOILERS AHEAD

 

 

 

 

One of my favorite things about this movie that makes it different is its use of technology. They incorporate phones into the movie so much, and they are very important. Without the technology in this movie, it never would have ended the way it does. For one, Sydney, Vee’s best friend, would never have gotten Ty’s, the predicted winner of the game, number. This is a key plot point that seems subtle when it first happens, but it vital to the ending of the movie. Also, Vee’s friend Tommy is really in technology and is a key part in stopping the game. Had he not had the access to the “fastest internet in New York City,” Vee would have died.

My favorite scene of the movie is when Vee and Ian ride the motorcycle. It is such an exciting and well shot scene. Ian is blindfolded, so he is solely being steered by Vee. It really cements their relationship because without this scene, Vee might not have been able to trust Ian later on.

Another cute scene in the movie is when Vee must get a tattoo. The plot twist is that Ian has to choose what it is. This is such a cool moment because he chooses something that is very meaningful to her. Even though she is initially scared to get it, he helps her by doing a rap together. It is a great moment for their relationship.

If You Liked This Movie, you’d Like: When the Game Stands Tall, Remember the Titans, A League of their Own, Moneyball (it has Brad Pitt!!!), Bend it Like Beckham, Little Giants, Race, Bring it On,

If you didn’t cry like a little girl at least three times during this movie, you’re not human. Just kidding. You’re just a stronger person than I am. This movie, which is based on a true story, is a classic example of an inspiring sports movie.

For those of you unbeknownst to this treasure, here is a brief summary. Michael Oher is a large black teenager without a home. However, Leigh Anne Tuohy sees him one day, and asks her son about him. After finding out he has nowhere to go, the Tuohy invite Michael to live with them. It is then that the football loving family gets Michael to try the sport out himself. Michael then struggles to learn a new sport, keep up his grades, and avoid his past all while living with a new family.

I first want to talk about Sandra Bullock, who is the role of Leigh Anne. Don’t get me wrong, I love Sandra Bullock and can watch Miss Congeniality on repeat, but I was always surprised at this choice of role for her. However, after watching the movie just once, it is hard to imagine anyone else living up to the role. Sandra Bullock won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for her performance in this movie.

A perfect pick for casting was that of Michael Oher. The football player is played by Quinton Aaron. Although not known for many other films, he is well-known just because of this sole performance.

Other interesting acting choices are Lily Collins and Tim McGraw. Lily Collins coincidentally plays Michael’s “sister” Collins. She struggles at first to be comfortable with Michael being a part of the family, but she holds her head high and goes against her friends’ opinions. Tim McGraw, famous country singer, also makes an appearance. He plays Leigh Anne’s husband. Although he is not known for his acting, I still think he does a great portrayal of his role.

VERY SMALL SPOILERS AHEAD

I think one of the most powerful scenes of the movie is when Michael is struggling to learn football. Even though he may be the ideal body type for his position (FYI I know nothing about football), he is not good at hitting people. The coach is coaching him as he does all his other players. The coach yells and screams at the players and Michael to get better. But Leigh Anne knows better. She goes over to Michael and creates an analogy that Michael can understand. The phrase that she repeatedly uses is “Are you going to protect the family?” This is a double meaning because she is comparing how he protects the Tuohys to how he should protect the football team. The comparison works and helps Michael improve his football skill.

If You Liked This Movie, You’d Like: 50 First Dates, Just Go With It, Grown Ups, Blended, or any other Adam Sandler movie (besides Click which I don’t find good)

My next movie selection is Jack and Jill starring Adam Sandler. For whatever reason, movie critics love to hate on this movie. A lot of times, this movie is deemed one of the worst of the 2010s. I would like to argue otherwise.

Here’s a quick summary of the movie. Jack works as an advertiser and wants Al Pacino to star in one of his commercials. Jill is Jack’s rather odd twin sister. She is loud, unaccustomed to social norms, and just really unique. Jack attempts to use his sister to get Al Pacino to star in his commercial.

The plot sounds cheesy, and trust me, it is. One thing that makes this film a little quirky is Adam Sandler plays both Jack and Jill. Al Pacino is also a strange choice of actor in this movie, but I just kind of rolled with it.

I love Adam Sandler, personally. I don’t know many movies of his that I don’t like. His acting skill is truly amazing. It is extremely difficult to play both main characters in a movie. Only great actors such as Jesse Eisenberg (The Double), Eddie Murphy (The Nutty Professor), and Nicolas Cage (Adaptation) are able to complete such a daring role.

Also, if you need a little extra motivation to watch this movie, Johnny Depp makes a surprise entrance.

So, if you’ve seen this movie, there’s a good chance you hated it, and have lost respect of my movie picking skills. But I truly believe this movie has such a good message that it deserves better than its embarrassingly low rating.

Al Pacino, shockingly, falls in love with loud, crazy, unique Jill. And most people will find her annoying. But Al doesn’t. When Jack asks what he sees in her, he says this: He says that Jill has watched as her brother has gotten everything. And even though she has never gotten the same things as her brother, she chooses to be happy and love him regardless. It takes a very strong and loving person to be like this, and I admire that in Jill. Jill is never overcome with sadness, jealousy, envy, or hate.

This movie grooms you to like Jack more than Jill. It makes you think Jill is needy and annoying and embarrassing for Jack. But at the end of the movie, the director slaps you in the face by making you realize how shallow you were thinking about Jill. Jill is never anything but kind in the movie. She loves her family more than anything. And most importantly, she is never afraid to be herself. Society tells you to be yourself, but then judges you when you do so. Jill is an amazing person who puts others before herself, and is a much better person than Jack in the end.

This movie teaches you about family. Jack and Jill’s odd, yet funny conversation in their made-up language towards the end of the movie is one of the best scenes. It proves that family always comes first.

And of course, who doesn’t love the last scene of the movie where Jill finds true love. ♡

So, maybe I’ve changed your mind about this movie. But if the cheese is just too much for you, I understand.

To all you guys, I highly recommend this movie because it is such a classic, but I understand this movie might not be for you. However, don’t let the cute outfits and lip gloss deter you from trying this movie. It is about so much more than a rich blonde girl.

 

I’m not going to lie, this movie is straight up romance, with bits and pieces of comedy. There is no action whatsoever in the film.

 

Clueless, made in 1995, is one of my favorite movies of all time. The basic premise of the movie is a popular rich girl, Cher, and her best friend, Dionne, befriend the strange new girl, Tai, and attempt to make her popular. Despite the summary of the movie sounding cliché and girly, it goes much deeper. Cher uses her people skills to learn about herself and try to become a better person. With the help of her step-brother (sort of), Cher realizes that popularity isn’t everything.

The one part of this movie that I dislike is the relationship between Cher and her step-brother Josh, who is at least four years older than her, although I am not exactly sure how much older. Their relationship starts off rocky with insults from both sides, and by the end of the movie, you are shipping incest so hard. Even though Cher’s father and Josh’s mother were only married for a very brief period of time, I am not sure I like the romantic relationship between the two. Furthermore, Cher is just getting her license while Josh is already talking about law school. The age gap between the two is too much for me to be comfortable with.

 

Okay, so let’s talk about Tai. Tai comes to the new school, and seems hopeless. Dressed strangely, wearing weird make-up, and overall just not resembling her fellow Beverly Hills classmates. But never fear, for Cher gallantly takes it upon herself to change Tai. During this process, Cher overcorrects and accidentally ends up making Tai more popular than herself. People argue that Cher only becomes a good person after this, but I think otherwise. Cher may come off as ditzy, lazy, and shallow, but she is genuinely a good person. Here are some reasons that I think so:

 

• Cher takes it upon herself to talk to Tai when she knows nobody. She really doesn’t have to befriend the new girl, but she does anyway.
• She helps get two teachers together. Cher loves giving makeovers and to teachers are no exception. Cher pounces on the opportunity to help a fellow woman out.
• Cher also tries to help Tai get the boy she likes, Elton.
• She collects donations for a relief organization.
• She gets food for her father and his lawyers when they pull an all-nighter.
• She makes sure her father eats right all the time.

 

 

Overall, this movie might be a stereotypical chick flick, but it is very good. I hope that if this movie sounds good to you, you consider watching it if only for style inspiration. No one can pull off yellow plaid quite like Cher.☺

Even if you have made it an entire eighteen years having never seen Fight Club, which I think is hard to do, you probably know the first rule of Fight Club. However, if you have no idea what I’m talking about, the first rule is “You do not talk about Fight Club.” This movie is so iconic and has so many reasons to watch it: the complex plot, quality directing, and stunning special effects just to name a few. Admittedly, the noble reason I first watched this movie is two words: Brad Pitt.

However, in all seriousness, this action movie is exciting from start to finish. If you are someone who likes movies that force you to pay attention to small details throughout the film and connect them at the end, this movie is for you. Another attraction of the movie is the name itself. What is Fight Club? Who is in it? Why are people fighting? I watched the movie to have all of these questions answered.

Anyway, back to Brad Pitt. Okay, okay, and also Edward Norton, and Helena Bonham Carter. I want to give props to the Casting Director because whoever he or she is, he or she did an excellent job. And despite his hotness (am I right ladies?), Brad Pitt really is a skilled actor. Paired with Edward Norton, these two make up an iconic duo. This duo’s chemistry is natural from start to finish. Helena Bonham Carter’s portrayal of Marla Singer is also spot on. These three characters alone make up the bulk of the movie, and without their acting abilities, this two hour-ten-minute film could have been considered dull.

If you’re looking for a small summary of this movie, all I can really say is that a man wants to change his life, and that change begins with Fight Club. Because of the copious plot twists, I won’t tell you anymore as I promised no spoilers.

So in review:

Watch this movie if: you like action movies, movies that have plot twists, or Brad Pitt (no shame).

Don’t watch this movie if: you have trouble keeping up with complicated plots, you don’t like seeing blood, you have something against Brad Pitt

If you don’t remember, it is that Edward Norton is real life Tyler Durden while Brad Pitt is the Tyler Durden of Norton’s imagination. If you are watching the movie for the first time, it is nearly impossible to catch any of the clues that could give away the plot twist. However, if you go back and re-watch the movie as I did, you will notice multiple instances that give away the ending. Here I have listed some of those clues simply for your enjoyment.

 

• Before the figment Tyler is introduced on the plane, you can actually see two very small flashes of his character before that as well as one scene where he is in the background. The first flash of fake Tyler is at the Testicular Cancer meeting. The second time is right after Tyler meets Marla. While these two flashes are brief and could be missed, they are unmistakable when specifically looking for them. And lastly, the third time he is seen, this time for a longer period of time, is when real Tyler is in an airport and you can see Pitt’s character with luggage in the background. What is notable about this scene is what Tyler is saying when Pitt is seen. Tyler says, “If you wake up at a different time in a different place, could you wake up as a different person?” (Fight Club). It is no accident that the writers had Tyler question this while Pitt is in view. This is one of the earliest clues as to who Pitt really is in the film.
• The second clue is when Tyler and Tyler officially meet on the plane. Real Tyler points out that the two have the same briefcase.
• The third clue is probably a little more controversial. If you know the plot twist, you know that Tyler is actually beating himself up a couple times since Pitt’s character isn’t real. Now I don’t know about you, but when Tyler beats himself up on purpose in his boss’s office, it seems extremely convincing. The only way someone could have hit himself like that is if he has had practice. This is a small clue to the fact that Tyler was beating himself up all along.via GIPHY
• Tyler first sees figment Tyler drive away in a luxurious red car. Now, when figment Tyler invites real Tyler to stay with him when his apartment explodes, the car is gone. Real Tyler even acknowledges this and figment Tyler responds to this by saying, “What car?” implying that there never was a car. This shows that the car was just made up in Tyler’s head along with Pitt’s character.
• When Tyler and Tyler are sharing a very small portion of their backstory, the resemblance is striking. They both mention having fathers that were not great. This is one of the clues proving that Tyler and Tyler are the same person. However, this clue is extremely hard to catch when seeing the movie for the first time as it appears to merely be a coincidence.
• In my opinion, the largest clue that might lead someone to guess the plot twist is the relationship between the Tylers and Marla. Real Tyler believes that fake Tyler is with Marla. Fake Tyler makes real Tyler promise to never talk about fake Tyler to Marla. If you look closely, you will notice that all three characters are never shown in the same frame until after the plot twist is revealed. Anytime Marla leaves, fake Tyler will return and vice versa.
