What is News Today?

Every day something new happens in the world, which grabs the headlines, and audiences focus. These stories show up on the front page of the newspaper, as they will get the most interest. But when you turn the page newspaper, different stories appear; however, these stories have been deemed less important than those on the front page. One of these second-page news stories I decided to read was The New York Times coverage of “Israeli Soldier, on Trial, Lashes out at Commanders” as reported by James Glanz.

25ISRAEL-web1-master768The story covers the trial of Sgt. Elor Azaria, and his recent statements against his commanding officer, Maj. Tom Naaman. Sergeant Azaria is on trial for shooting and killing the Palestinian prisoner, who was shot in the leg by other Israeli forces after attacking them. Sergeant Azaria claims that there was “real and immediate danger”; however, the Major Naaman claims that he did not authorize the killing and when Azaria was asked why he stated “The terrorist was alive. He has to die.” Both of these individuals statements about the killing are very different, and the trial hopes to weed out the truth of the event and punish someone if wrongdoing is proven.

More importantly, this news story is important because it shows some of the public relation attempts by Israel, through the Israeli-Palestine conflict. Israel has been fighting a war with Palestine since Israel was first established. This long war has gained international attention throughout the decades by nations, such as Russia, United States, and Great Britain. Due to these international relations, Israel feels the need to continue to show that they are the more civilized than the Palestinians. In doing so, Israel is using cases, such as this one, to show that the government is holding their people accountable for any wrong doing. Isreal role in the conflict and fighting seem fairer, and controlled, since the killing of an enemy is investigated.
