As an upcoming senior in college, I must start to think about what I want to do with the rest of my life. Sounds stressful, right? Out of the millions of options in the world you have to choose one. On top of that, you have to go off of what your 19 year old self decided to pick for you to major in. Luckily, even though it could seem like you are stuck in this field of study for eternity, that is not true.
I recently read an article in a Forbes newsletter by Ashley Stahl explaining six reasons why your college major does not matter. This definitely lifted weight off of my shoulders. She introduced many different ideas why you should not feel stuck in your major that shifted my mindset in a positive manner. It is scary to think that something you picked at such a young age could be so permanent. Good thing it actually is not.
One idea Stahl discussed is that your experience on or off the job is appealing to recruiters of any kind. Having numerous experiences on your resume shows you are, “motivated, passionate, and involved.” Though excellent grades and academic successes are eye-catching, your experience with real world jobs is what stands out the most. You cannot teach what you gain from experience.
Overall, this article has true meaning to me as I continue my search for a career after college. It reminds me to be open minded about any job that could land in my lap. It does not matter what it is or what my main focus on in college was. If I have a passion to pursue it and the qualifications to do so, nothing will stop me. Saying this, I am flexible and adaptable to work in any field of study!
