RCL 3: Essay Outline

In my essay I plan to compare the topic of my speech, which was the peace symbol, to the victory symbol (two fingers in the shape of a V). The victory symbol has widely been accepted as an additional symbol of world peace however its origins are drastically different from those of the pacifist (3 pointed) peace symbol.

Introduction: Introduce both symbols and briefly contextualize them. State that although the Victory symbol has found use as a sign of general peace its origins in war drastically separate it from the 3 pointed peace symbol.

Paragraph 1: A concise, but pertinent summary of the history of the pacifist peace sign based on my speech. Highlight that from its inception it was a symbol of pacifism, that it was first introduced post WW2 and that it was created by a Christian anti nuclearization advocate.

Paragraph 2: Talk about the origins of the Victory sign. Highlight that although it was used to show the defeat of Nazism which led to a (brief) global peace, its origins are in war and thus the context of the inception of both symbols is completely different.

Paragraph 3: Acknowledge their similarities, mostly the fact that both were adopted by the counterculture anti-Vietnam war movement. Perhaps a good place for an aside about how the US anti-Vietnam war movement served almost like a bulk consolidator of culture processing symbols that previously had very little to do with each other and giving them a new meaning.

Conclusion: Reiterate the significance and scope of the differences between the symbols, but also concede the similarities. Highlight the importance of both symbols.

General Strategy: Heavily employ primary sources, avoid being too verbose.

  1. I think this is a very interesting topic to write about! The victory symbol can have different meanings in different countries. For example, in China, most people have their two fingers in a V shape when they take a photo, but it doesn’t have anything to do with world peace. Maybe you can talk about the different meanings of this symbol in different countries, but what you have outlined looks great! I am really looking forward to seeing our essay on this topic! Good job!

  2. This is an interesting topic. I didn’t know the history of the peace sign and a victory sign. To be honest, I never even thought of them as those signs. I usually presented a V shape when taking photos or just saying high to people often that I forgot that it was a peace sign and victory sign. I like how you are planning to talk about the origins of both and analyze how they are similar.

  3. Hi! I think this is a great topic to talk about! It really did catch my interest and I was intrigued by the topic. I never knew that the “peace sign” with your hand, was originally a sign of victory. I think you wrote out a well outline and hit very important points. You take about comparing them but not too much which is perfect. You dive into the historical background and then how culture has had an impact on what it is today. I think this is a solid essay and seems very interesting! Good Job!
