Some of my family is religious, some of my family isn’t. My mom grew up Catholic like my grandmother. My father’s parents were always split on religion. His father was Catholic, and his mother was Baptist. They both respected the other’s denomination, agreeing that when they die, they will meet in the same place regardless. So my grandma and grandpa went to separate church services on Sunday, but their children always attended the Baptist church with Grandma Nellie. Now, my parents both attend an Evangelical Presbyterian church back home. Neither of them remain Catholic, but regardless, they kept the tradition of naming god parents for their children (i.e. Emily, Jack, and me).
Emily is oldest, so when she was born, they made the choice to assign godparents. My parents chose my Aunt Carol and Uncle Chris, my dad’s closest brother in age. Similarly, when Jack was born, another married relative couple became his godparents, Aunt Joyce and Uncle Rich.
My godparents, however, are slightly less conventional. When I was born, the question of godparents came up. Naturally, my mom suggested her long time best friend, Jean. My mom met Jean in seventh grade, when they both lived in Phoenix, Arizona. Their relationship has exponentially grown from there, and still continues strong. Just months ago, Jean gave a toast to their long and exciting friendship at mom’s fiftieth birthday celebration. Jean’s daughter, Carmen, was born just over a year after me and so I met my longest and best friend. Much like our mothers’, mine and Carmen’s friendship hasn’t stopped growing since the day she was born.
And so, Jean became my godmother. Although now, it may be more accurate to describe her as my second mom. Jean is an independent, liberal woman who won’t hesitate to tell you when you’re wrong. I have learned a lot of my humor and spunk from years and years of being her goddaughter. My whole life, Jean has called me “katiedid”, and even to this day, will address any package she sends to school for me to that name. I don’t mind it and would never complain, but it really throws off the workers at the commons desk.
What about my godfather? My dad agreed to naming Jean my godmother and took it upon himself to name my godfather. And who did he pick? His best friend growing up, Dave. Dave is a mountain man- full beard, pony tail, and camo pants to boot. He’s a great story teller and avid hunter. If I could describe him in one word, it would be “instigator”. Dave loves to get people riled up about anything and everything. When he travelled with my PSU alumni parents to the Pitt vs. Penn State football game, he cheered for Pitt just for the hell of it. Dave will argue just to argue, and take an opposing side just for fun. I can rip on him all I want for it, but I give it right back. He loves my cat and dog more than humanly possible, but refuses to get a pet of his own. His stubbornness definitely rubbed off on me over the years. My dad and Dave grew up in the same neighborhood, wreaking havoc and getting into trouble on the regular. And of course, they remain friends to this day, often biking together or just sharing a beer and some laughs before dinner.
Although Jean and Dave aren’t really nurturing me in my religious education or guiding me in my faith, as the catholic faith intended, they’re still my godparents, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
