Presentation for PSU Teaching and Learning with Technology Symposium, May 11, 2021
Abstract:
Four strategies can help foster intrinsic student motivation in any teaching context, including online: relevance, authenticity, appropriate challenge, and human connection. These are not meant to replace grades, which still provide powerful incentive and reward to do the hard work of learning. Instead, these strategies draw students in by adding intrinsic motivation. Providing encouragement and multiple multiple ways for students to participate and interact online will also reduce barriers for students to engage when they are juggling many other priorities.
