The first and most blatantly obvious distasteful aspect of the ad is that the words re-Civilize yourself appear over a picture of a man with a clean shaven head who appears to be throwing a version of his head that has an Afro. The Afro hair style is a look predominately worn by members of the African American community, whereas the buzz cut is a more stereotypical look for a Caucasian male. This combination takes up the largest part of the ad and wrongly insinuates that white people, or practices considered to be stereo typically white, are in some way more in line with societal acceptance and should be aimed for. The ad continues this unacceptable message with a box in the top right corner which reads “ LOOK LIKE YOU GIVE A DAMN” in all capital letters. This message prods a more subtle racist tone playing with the stereotypical idea that the black man (indicated solely by the head with an Afro) who lets his hair grow out naturally do not care about blank. This can be extrapolated to his job, his life, society seeing that the main call to action is to “Re-civilize” oneself. The first two points taken together create the unacceptable message that a African American, that does not take steps to make himself ‘more white’- insinuated by the buzz cut- is incapable of contributing to society and must not care about anything. A third and final inappropriate aspect of the advertisement is the background of the picture. The head – symbolic of the stereo typically black male- is being thrown away from the building which appears to be so sort of office complex. This Creates the visual depiction of a Black man being cast into the street/parking lot (symbolic of poverty) and the white man ( or a person who acts more white) casting the image out into the street to presumably return to work or so other apparently “civilized” function. Considering all three of these points, the ad creates the racist impression that a African American male is unable to be considered civilized and care about his role in society unless they proactively act more white. Which creates the racist standard that stereo typically white attributes should hold higher regard within a societal framework.
