“What’s the Future of Capitalism?” by Adena Freidman is one of my favorite TED Talks because it is very relevant to today’s society, and the talk is given in a very professional and intriguing way.  The American economy operates as a Capitalist society, and this economic system aligns with the values of American democracy as it places tremendous influence in the hands of the people.  

However, Capitalism seems to receive a bad rap in modern times because people feel that it causes problems.  Freidman acknowledges this theme at the beginning of her talk to recognize both sides of the coin. Her immediate recognition of the opposition signifies to the audience that she is open-minded and has thought about the bigger picture, rather than neglecting the side that counters her beliefs.

Since the bad notion of Capitalism is instilled in many people from societal pressures and beliefs, Freidman clearly explains the true definition of Capitalism to clear up any misconceptions or biases that the audience members might have.  She also expresses how this economic system corresponds with the government system, and she explains the role of the government in Capitalism. Explaining this background knowledge is a strategic move in Friedman’s speech organization; doing this ensures that everybody has the same fundamental idea of Capitalism as she progresses throughout the rest of her talk.

The remainder of Friedman’s talk builds on the idea that Capitalism is open to 

the influence of the people.  The initiative of the people stimulates healthy competition, which leads to choice and freedom.  As a viewer, this resonates with me because I place tremendous value in choice and freedom, and I am confident that many others value these aspects in economic decisions and all other decisions as well. 

In order to enhance her dialogue on the economic principles, Friedman incorporates stories and scenarios that allow people to comprehend the effects of the influence of the individual in Capitalism in a real situation, rather than just hearing them discussed in theory.  For instance, she tells the story of a woman who invested in a medical company that was working on research for a disease that her best friend had. Being able to invest in this company made the woman feel like she could have a role in saving her best friend’s life. This is a compelling and inspiring story, and many people can envision themselves in a similar situation.  As Friedman balances her economic principles with real stories, viewers gain a comprehensive understanding of the theory of the Capitalist system, with an outlook on how it can positively affect their lives.
