The running come game is an excellent exercise that is fun for the both the dog and owner and will improve the dog’s obedience to the come cue. Developing a reliable recall is extremely important because it enables you to prevent injury to the dog and lets you give them more freedom. However, this behavior is often difficult for pet owners to achieve, especially when squirrels or children are near-by.
The Running Come Game
The Running Come Game helps to increase excitement in the dog and the speed of the recall. The game involves the owner running backwards with the dog excitedly running after them in order to keep up. Below are instructions on how to play!
Step 1
Start in a safe enclose area, or with the dog on long lead (15 ft to 30 ft will do). Stand in front of the dog and present your baited fist (stuffed with their favorite treat) at nose level. Then slowly back away to allow the dog to follow your hand. With your voice, encourage the dog to follow you without saying the “come” cue.
Step 2
Just before the dog catches your hand, give the “come” cue and let them touch their nose to your fist. Once this happens, mark the behavior with “yes”, or “good dog” and give them their treat immediately; all while backing up.
Step 3
Once the dog is 90% proficient in following your baited hand, finish the behavior with an automatic sit. This means that the dog sits without a cue. Run backwards while luring the dog, and when you’re prepared to stop, stand in one place and raise your baited fist just above the dogs head. This will prompt a sitting position. The moment their rump touches the ground, release the treat and praise lavishly.
Important Note
Don’t let the dog find out they can ignore the “Come” cue or that they can run faster than you; therefore it is vitally important you never use the “Come” cue unless you are certain the dog will obey. In other words, set the dog up for success. Creating extremely positive associations to the recall will help the dog keep its focus on you.
