Research Is Colorful: Spring 2015 Monthly Multidisciplinary Seminar Series

KSEA Central PA chapter successfully held ‘Monthly Multidisciplinary Seminar Series’ during the Spring semester of 2015. This multidisciplinary seminar series invite all students regardless of their specific academic background. Speakers present their current state-of-art research in layman perspective and receive feedback from unfamiliar angles. Through this seminar series, KSEA Central PA wishes that the speakers have great opportunities to improve their presentation skills and to collect valuable feedback from the peers from different fields. At the same time, the audiences would learn knowledge on interesting topics and participate in Q&A sections to improve their critical thinking.2015spring_flyer

In 2015 Spring semester, KSEA Central PA chapter hold three seminars with speakers from various background ranging from Industrial Engineering (IE) to Education. The first speaker, Sang Jin Kweon (IE) was the opening speaker of the seminar series and wonderfully delivered his work in the allocation of the liquid natural gas (LNG) refueling stations along the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Mr. Kweon impressively used easy language to help the audiences to emphasize the motivation behind the research and to comprehend his complex modeling. As a result, he was awarded with the first prize for the Spring seminar series.

The second speaker, Jinhee Choi was from Adult Education Program. With very different background compared to many KSEA members, she presented her research on the effect of cultures on the laboratory safety training. While her research was not within Science and Engineering, the audiences were deeply involved in her presentation as most of them were experienced with laboratory safety training. Choi received valuable feedback from the audiences with the first-hand experience.

The last speaker of the 2015 Spring seminar series, Yooinn Hong (Geography) presented her work on agrobiodiversity from JeJu Island in South Korea. She was conducting on-site research at the time of presentation, and KSEA was able to connect her using telecommunication. For many KSEA members in Central PA chapter, the presentation by Hong was a great opportunity not only to learn about interesting changes happening in JeJu, but also to reminiscence our home country.
