Project 3 – Safety Training

For project 3, the student will be printing their surreal object using a 3D printer. The main purpose of the Safety training for it was to introduce students to the MakerBot 3D printer, the post-production process, and the hazards of this process. Although the 3D printer seems not that hard to operate and it does not have to be watched, some of the safety precautions have to be followed. In order for the object to be printed properly, the mash should be cleaned and healed so there are no holes, too many triangles, and so on. Then, 3D printer prints better when there are multiple objects, and because of that, the prints will be performed in groups. Glue has to be applied to the printer bed so that object does not move. It is also crucial to avoid touching the extruder of the printer because it very hot when the printer is heating and printing. What is more, it is important to adjust the quality of the print, because the higher quality can result in longer printing time.

During printing, the printer will create supports for overhanging parts of the object, and the postprocessing includes removing these supports and rafts. Trimming, sanding, or filing can be necessary to remove the remains of the supports. Objects can also be painted if needed.
