“Sheeesh”

If you’re an avid social media user, you’ve probably seen or heard the word “sheesh” somewhere. I’m not talking about sheesh, the word used to negatively express disbelief, surprise, or annoyance. This meaning is more positive and sometimes used as a compliment. So what does it mean?

According to Urban Dictionary, sheesh basically means “Dammmmmm.” Different from its original 1955 definition, it conveys how impressed someone is, is used to hype something/someone up, or is used to express excitement.

kingjames O Aug 27, 2017 at 12:42 PM Damn you're Stunning!! Lead to the way Beautiful!! Happy Beautiful B-day my O! Proud of everything you've become and what's more exciting is you're still growing into your own! I'm lucky I get to be apart of it all! Love you so much and it's an honor to be your husband but more importantly your best friend! But the sheesh that we hear today is not new to 2021. In fact, its role in drip culture began in 2017. Professional NBA player, Lebron James, is known to use sheesh and #sheesh in his Instagram posts. He often uses it to show excitement or postive feelings, so you could say he helped modernize the use of the word. Soon after, other celebrities began to use it in social media, and even rappers in their music. You can technically use it in any context now, but in the past week, many people have been using it as either a compliment or with hints of mockery.

It blew up on TikTok when @meetjulio posted a video of a frog, while people in the background continuously yelled “sheeeesh.” Today, the TikTok has 3.7 million views and the sound has gone viral in multiple renditions of the sheesh trend.

@meetjulio

With the abundant employment of the word sheesh, the options of what to do with the TikTok are endless. Some have chosen to purposefully brag about accomplishments such as a new car or clothes, while many videos that can be found under the sound are memes.

These parodies often joke about something about the future. Let’s look at an example!

Additionally, there is a stance that people usually take when saying sheesh. It’s called the “ice in my veins” pose.

The phrase/pose which means “cold-blooded” actually originated from sports. In games, it is typically applied during the final minutes as a sign of using strength and determination to succeed. It began when D’angelo Russell started using it as a celebration pose.

Ice In My Veins Pose depicting NBA player D'Angelo Russell pointing to his arm.

In an interview with GQ, he said, “It’s something my dad said growing up. He always said you have to be prepared for big moments, you gotta have ice in your veins. You have to have no feelings. You have to go out there and play your hardest and do what you do. That was the celebration what I performed well and knowing he prepared me mentally.”

But TikTok has totally transformed it, to the point where the original pose has lost its meaning. On the app, it is just known as the “TikTok arm thing.”

Well now you know about the interesting back story behind the sheesh/ice in my veins trend! Next time you hear someone yell it on campus (which I hear almost everyday now), you’ll be in on the trend!

The “Super Straight” Movement

Over the last few weeks, people on social media have been identifying as “super straight.”

The term was coined by Kyle Royce in a now-deleted TikTok (re-upoloaded on YouTube as well as below), where he states he “made a new sexuality … (in which he) only dates the opposite gender, women, that are born women.” Essentially, the super straight sexuality only involves cis-straight people and says that transgender women are not really women. However, he uses the term as an excuse and claims that he cannot be considered transphobic. Users also claim that since it is a new sexual orientation, it should be respected just as other marginalized gender identities are.

http://https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z8vQhkPnEE4

The video gained over 2 million likes before it was taken down, and since then, people have been openly identifying as super straight. They even adopted a super straight pride flag and merchandise.

It reached several platforms, including a /pol board on 4chan, which is known as the home for people with far-right beliefs. Members on the board discussed being super straight in order to “drive a wedge” within the LGBTQ+ community and “use the left’s tactics against themselves … for not accepting super straights.” There were also posts that linked the super straight acronym, SS, to the Nazi SS and salute.

Both Reddit and TikTok have banned users from searching or using the tag and TikTok issued this statement:

“TikTok is an inclusive space for positive and creative expression. Our Community Guidelines make clear that we do not tolerate hate speech or hateful ideologies, and we take action when issues are brought to our attention. We have banned the account in question as well as the hashtag #superstraight.

Part of what makes TikTok unique is that our community — people from all walks of life — can express their authentic selves and we don’t want this to change. We will continue to monitor this situation for further developments and take action wherever necessary.”

Royce said that he “never meant to be hateful … (and) created it because (he) was sick of being labeled with the very negative terms for having a preference, something (he) can’t control.” But transgender people and activists were quick to point out that the super straight movement is just a transphobic movement hiding behind inclusivity. Despite this uproar, there is no doubt that the LGBTQ+ community stuggles for equal rights and representation, things that those identifying as super straight have never lacked.

Finally, I will leave you with a TikTok explaining why the concept of “super straight” is just wrong.

Are Old Quarantine Trends Coming Back?

Does whipped coffee sound familiar to you? How about mini-pancake cereal? Maybe cloud bread rings a bell?

I honestly have not seen any new TikTok trends that I think are worth writing about. However, I have been seeing people recreating old trends from quarantine, bringing a slight sense of nostalgia from when we all thought those weeks were just a short break from school.

At the time, social distancing and lockdown limited us to our own living spaces. Because of this, we were forced to become baristas and chefs, leading to some interesting dishes. The most popular ones included whipped coffee, mini-pancake cereal, and cloud bread.

First, we have whipped coffee! If you like sweet and creamy coffee, this recipe is for you. Similar to the feta pasta that I just wrote about, whipped coffee took over TikTok and everyone on the app, including myself, was making it. It sounds weird at first, but it tastes and looks pretty good!

@imhannahcho

yes i hand whisked this whipped coffee for like 20 mins bc my mommy wanted to try it 👻 she loved it!! (달고나 커피) #korean #fyp #aesthetic

♬ Put your head on my shoulder cover by karlo – K a r l o

The TikTok above popularized this drink in America, however, whipped coffee, also known as dalgona coffee, originated in South Korea. It is based off of a South Korean candy and only needs instant coffee, sugar, and hot water. Simply mix up those ingredients until it becomes a frothy mixture and add it to a glass of milk and ice. In the end, you get an aesthetically pleasing drink that tastes great! You can also try this with matcha too!

The whipping process can take a while by hand so I recommend a hand-mixer or frother because it’s definitely harder than it looks. It took me three tries to finally get it right.

Next we have mini-pancake cereal!

After whipped coffee died off, a new aesthetically pleasing dish came to life and it is exactly what it sounds like. @sydneymelhoff on TikTok started this trend after using left-over batter to create a fun cereal. Hers turned out more like Dippin’ Dots, but it still looked yummy.

@sydneymelhoff

♬ Over it Chinese New Year Remix by JohhnyG – KingVADER

All you need is pancake batter, something to squeeze tiny circles onto a pan, and whatever pancake or cereal toppings you like!  The result is a cute looking pancake cereal that some claim are better than regular pancakes.

Finally, there was cloud bread! It’s called cloud bread because you get a super fluffy bread with only three ingredients: egg whites, cornstarch, and sugar.

@lifewithtuyen

It is essentially an enhanced meringue, but people have also added vanilla and strawberry extracts for flavor. You can also add extra things such as food coloring, almond slices, sprinkles, and much more. The recipe includes slightly more directions, so here is the recipe if you want to try it!

These dishes are definitely more for looks rather than taste, but atleast we got easy things to make to keep us busy in the kitchen. Let me know if you have or want to try any of these and what you think about TikTok users bringing them back!

The Famous Feta Pasta

Prepare to be hungry because I am about to show you the famous feta pasta that has been ALL OVER TikTok recently. Don’t worry, this is nothing like NYU’s disturbing quarantine meals which I wrote about back in September! No, this food is actually edible and delicious, so let’s get into it.

Image result for uunifetapasta
Image source.

TikTok users are raving over this amazing and simple dish that only needs pasta, garlic, a block of feta cheese, cherry tomatoes, and olive oil with preferred seasoning. The best part is that the recipe is straightforward as it only requires baking the ingredients (while the pasta cooks), combining the mixture, and finally tossing the cooked pasta in! In the end, you get a creamy, cheesy, and yummy dish that was quite easy to make.

Although this just started trending on TikTok, the recipe isn’t exactly new. Back in 2019, a Finnish food blogger, Jenni Häyrinen (@liemessa), posted the Instagram photo you see at the top of this post, bringing attention to her baked feta pasta, which is called uunifetapasta in Finland! At the time, her recipe video went extremely viral in Finland with 2.7 million views (Finland has a population of 5.5 million, making it even more impressive), that even the supermarkets started running out of feta cheese.

But her recipe is facing another wave of fame as TikTok users are recreating it. Accounts that are influential on food TikTok like @feelgoodfoodie and @grilledcheesesocial brought the dish to the platform, and now everyone is going crazy for it. Some influencers have even mentioned how their local stores are out of feta cheese too.

In the past few days, I have seen multiple ways to make it, including adding basil, different types of cheese, pesto, vegan alternatives, and much more. Häyrinen enjoys seeing the variety, but she hopped on to TikTok to show users the original recipe. She noticed that a lot of people were missing out on one main ingredient, and it was the chili peppers! You can see how she incorporates the chili in her TikTok below. But you can also look here for her original recipe 🙂

Uunifetapasta is commonly made in Finland now, but I hope this trend stays forever in the U.S. too! I am so excited about this recipe because it is actually making me want to cook! As someone who is not skilled in the kitchen, that is definitely saying something. Even if you aren’t feeling the recipe as much as I am, the TikToks of people making it are oddly satisfying to watch. Let me know if you guys liked reading about this food trend, have made it, want to make it, or are feeling hungry!

TikTok’s Take on the 2021 Presidential Inauguration

Hello all, welcome back to my blog and if you are new, hi, I am Kylee and this is TikTok on the Clock. This blog serves to explain various trends on the social media known as TikTok, so whether you are new to the app or even a pro, this site can be for you! View my first blog post here for a proper introduction to my posts and how TikTok works.

So, what better way to start off the new year and continuation of my blog with TikToks about the most recent Presidential Inauguration? This is not necessarily a trend, but a lot of TikToks were made, so let’s take a look!

Image Source.

As you all know, on January 20, 2021, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were sworn into office as the 46th President and the 49th Vice President of the United States. As always, social media users were quick to celebrate, make memes, and voice their opinion. TikTokers covered a lot about the inauguration, so let’s look at some highlights!

To begin, a certain TikTok star was actually a part of the new President and Vice President’s Parade Across America special! Nathan Apodaca (@420doggface208) went viral with 12.5 million likes for his TikTok that features him skateboarding and sipping Ocean Spray cranberry juice to Fleetwood Mac’s song “Dreams.”

@420doggface208

♬ Dreams (2004 Remaster) – Fleetwood Mac

The oddly relaxing video gained the attention of Mick Fleetwood, Ocean Spray, and many others, to help raise money and give him a home. He recreated the viral video for the inauguration as he skated down Idaho’s snowy roads with a U.S. flag in hand.

Let’s continue!

One of many TikTokers’ favorite parts of the inauguration were the outfits, or drip as Gen Z likes to call it. Although the day was about the new President, others definitely stole the show with their fashion choices! There was Jill Biden in blue, the Biden grandchildren in monochrome looks, Vice President Kamala Harris and Michelle Obama in purple, Lady Gaga in a gown, JLO in white, and many more striking outfits fit for the day.

They clearly did not come to play with their looks, but there was one more person that TikTok did not forget to mention! My personal favorite, Bernie Sanders!

Considering his popularity with younger and left-leaning voters, it is no surprise that he is often made into a great meme. And that’s exactly what happened on Inauguration Day. Sanders arrived in a disposable face mask, mittens, and the coat he wore in his viral “I am once again asking you” fundraising ad.

But he is going viral AGAIN on almost every platform for the photo on the right. It is a shot of the senator socially distancing and sitting with his arms and legs crossed, brows furrowed.

Many joked that Sanders had better places to be than the Inauguration and others have photoshopped him onto other images.

@thephantasmicprince

The internet is savage for these 😝 #savage #bernie #berniememes #funny #fyp #foryoupage #foryourpage #memes #meme #jokes #laughter #fun #hilarious

According to Time.com, “the only comment Sen. Sanders has made thus far seems to be a pretty on brand Instagram post. In a short video, he answers a question about his fashion by calling for the Senate to pass $2,000 coronavirus relief checks for every adult in America.”

*update: Sanders has turned his Inauguration meme into a sweatshirt and is now selling them for charity!*

And that is why I love Bernie. But that is all for this glimpse into the Inauguration side of TikTok! I hope you enjoyed, let me know what other trends you’re interested in reading about!

My Yellow

what-does-my-yellow-mean-on-tiktok-1603814787278.jpg

SOURCE: TIKTOK

If you’ve been confused by the #yellow or #myyellow floating around the For You page, I am here to explain what’s going on. The word “yellow” has several different meanings, but TikTok has proposed a new meaning that is really sweet.

Different from any other trend I have written about, TikTokers are using the term “my yellow” to refer to their best friend or person in life. It can be a romantic partner, friend, family, pet, or literally anything that means something to you. The options are endless.

The trend results in a cute slideshow of pictures/videos of and with their yellow.

On October 26, @itsjennaraine started the trend with the TikTok below receiving great feedback from an audience that was inspired to create their own #yellow TikToks.

*RECOMMEND TURNING VOLUME DOWN WITH EARPHONES*

@itsjennaraine

the 13 year age gap got nothin on us sissy 🥺 #sisters #sad #yellow #relatable #family #teen #ColorCustomizer #greenscreen

♬ Coldplay – Yellow – ev

The trend and term references the song “Yellow” by Coldplay which is heard as a remix in the video. The song is about unrequited love, so having the TikTok dedicated to that person or thing is quite beautiful. The included lyrics say:

“And it was all yellow

(Aah) Your skin, oh yeah, your skin and bones

(Ooh) Turn into something beautiful

(Aah) You know, you know I love you so”

I love this trend because its message is so sweet and reminds us of who/what we are grateful for. It is not only uplifting for ourselves, but for others too. The trend is just so heart-warming that it is difficult to not feel a range of emotions when watching, even if you don’t know the person.

With a global pandemic and the Presidential election, a positive and uplifting trend like this is just what the world needs.

So let’s look at some other examples!

“Me Leaving…”

I’ve covered most of the major trends that have been controlling the For You page, so today I decided to write about a slightly smaller trend that still deserves a good laugh. This week’s blog is about the #MeLeaving trend. To summarize, the trend consists of users dramatically exiting an extremely messy situation.

@brandonbouley

this is going to be my thotphia video

♬ Blow Your Mind (Mwahchallenge) – Dua Lipa

The trend is under the sound “Blow Your Mind” by Dua Lipa, which previously gained popularity for the TikTok dance that was created for it. However, it was reinvented on October 16 when @brandonbouley uploaded the TikTok above, kicking off the trend. He blew a kiss to the camera and walked away in slo-mo with the caption, “me walking away from my computer after googling every question and still getting a 44.” The video gained over 1.9 million views in only ten days as other creators decided to join in on the trend with other chaotic scenarios.

Like this one, where @talonbuzbee shows off his fantastic parking skills:

@talonbuzbee

Mwah ( dc:@sam_denaer )

♬ Blow Your Mind (Mwahchallenge) – Dua Lipa

The one thing I love about these types of TikToks is how relatable they can be. As we are all experiencing school online, I think many of us can relate to not getting a good grade on an assignment when we had an abundance of resources to help us (not encouraging cheating!). Or like the second example, in situations where we fail to do a good parking job. I have definitely been through this as parking is not my best skill.

But anyways, this trend is very short, sweet, and self-explanatory so let’s look at some other examples.

Here we have the TikTok famous physics professor’s version of @brandonbouley’s TikTok:

@sutherlandphys

And another one joking about driving/parking skills to reference the alternative driver’s test that can be found online for some states:

And one more that I personally enjoyed because I loved Vector in the movie:

@silly_mangos

Okay I’m not that bad at physics but still #physics #vector #dispicableme

Watch these to learn how to walk away from the worst situations without losing your dignity. As the TikTok official caption states, “Sometimes you just need to make a scene when you leave.”

Let me know what you think! If you were to walk away from something, what would it be?

Turn Yourself Into A Tim Burton Character

With Halloween coming up, a festive trend that has been going viral for the past week is the Tim Burton challenge.

Burton is known for his gothic cinematic style, specifically the round droopy eyes and sunken cheeks that his characters are designed with. From the Corpse Bride to The Nightmare Before Christmas to Edward Scissorhands, his signature look has become an aesthetic in pop culture. But now, the classic Halloween look is coming to life as TikTok creators are turning themselves into their their own Tim Burton character.

@spaghettandmeatball

#TimeWarpScan #fyp I look so sad but I’ve been doing this for so long it’s so fun

♬ Ice Dance (From “Edward Scissorhands”) – Ashton Gleckman

As you can see, to become your own character, all you need to do is follow three simple steps.

  1. On TikTok, select the Time Warp Scan filter. Make sure it travels down instead of across the screen.
  2. Gently pull your eyes down to create the drooping/tired effect.
  3. Drag your fingers down the side of your cheeks to chisel out some accentuated cheekbones.

And you are done! But that was easier said than done because you have to stay super steady in order to actually get the aesthetic.

This trend originated from the girl above, @spaghettandmeatball or Julia. She created the TikTok on October 16th to the sound of Ice Dance from Edward Scissorhands. Her video is at 1.8 million views so it did not take long for others to follow in her steps.

Several people have posted their success and fails, resulting in some interesting Tim Burtonesque characters. The most famous people to try it out are Emma Chamberlain and Brittany Broski.

But let’s look at some examples!

A success:

And her is somewhat of a fail that resulted in a hilarious image:

@ugotveganlean

#TimeWarpScan

♬ Ice Dance (From “Edward Scissorhands”) – Ashton Gleckman

While this is a fun trend to hop on, many are using it to bring attention to some comments Tim Burton has made about diversity in his films. When promoting his movie, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, in 2016, Burton told a Bustle reporter:

“Nowadays, people are talking about [diversity] more, (but) things either call for things, or they don’t. I remember back when I was a child watching The Brady Bunch and they started to get all politically correct, like, OK, let’s have an Asian child and a black — I used to get more offended by that than just — I grew up watching blaxploitation movies, right? And I said, that’s great. I didn’t go like, OK, there should be more white people in these movies.”

There were a lot of mixed reactions to this comment, but some TikTokers have expressed their feelings about the director exluding people of color through the trend.

P.S. don’t forget to take the quiz to find out wh Tim Burton film you belong in! I got Beetlejuice! (find it under the “gothic cinematic style” link)

It’s the Parents’ Time to Shine

Image Source.

TikTok is known to be dominated by Gen Z, however, the parents do quite honestly create some of the best content.

In the past few days, parents have been all over TikTok, but not in the way you might think. Although we love Franklin and Grey’s moms, these parents are expressing their love in very different ways.

Nobody is sure who or what really started this new trend, but parents have been blatantly DRAGGING their children. See for yourself:

@heyoscr

I never thought a sperm meeting an egg could bring so much shame to my family #fyp #Affirmations #dad

♬ no no no no no no no no – #fypsounds

As you can see, in a less uplifting and more hilarious way, parents are being featured by insulting their kids! Different from other TikTok trends I have written about, this one has no hashtag. However, you can find this trend under the “No No No” sound by #fypsounds.

The trend consists of teenagers tricking their parents into recording what seems like a very innocent video. The parent records themselves slowly raising their phone over their head, making sure to get the TikToker in the background.  The video is then topped off with a caption that contains a mean message, making it appear as if the parent is roasting the teen.

That was a really bad explanation, but once you watch a few, you get the gist. Here’s another one with a slight twist, where a girl bravely gets her boyfriend’s dad to be in it.

@paekadegallo

♬ no no no no no no no no – #fypsounds

Some of them contain some dark humor, referencing how their child was a mistake, adopted, not good enough and others are just plain funny. The insults are somewhat extreme and very specific to each child, making it clear that the parent in fact did not come up with them.

You can definitely tell this trend was created by Gen Z. In fact, it screams our generation’s name. I mean, who else would essentially roast themselves over social media for clout? Each TikTok varies and although some parents may know about their contribution to the video, knowing that others have no clue makes the trend a little bit funnier.

Let’s go through some examples that have people you might have heard of!

Here we have Mark Cuban, NBA Dallas Mavericks owner and Shark Tank investor, joking about his daugher not being able to make a free throw while he owns a whole basketball team.

@alexis_cuban

Does someone w an athletic child want to trade?

♬ no no no no no no no no – #fypsounds

Next is Jeff Kinney, famous author that is mainly known for his Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. He mentions his books and makes fun of his son’s laziness.

@will.kinney

Zoo wee mama 🙄 #jeffkinney #rowley #greg #gregheffley #diaryofawimpykid #rodrick #manny #lodeddiper #zooweemama

♬ no no no no no no no no – #fypsounds

So whether you’re proud or full on embarrased by it, let us appreciate the innocent parents and TikTokers’ ability to completely make fun of themselves in this trend. Would you do it? If you said yes, what would the roast be?

#bodypositivity

It’s about time that #bodypositivity and #selflove have become a trend.

TikTok has warped Gen Z’s perception of body image to the point where it is unhealthy. Compared to other social medias, it is extremely easy for people who fit society’s beauty standards to show up on the For You page. In fact, TikTok’s algorithm, which was explained in my first blog post, shows an unintentional racial bias. When searching through recommended profiles based on a certain account, other accounts that are extremely similar will pop up. Therefore, if TikTok notices an interest in a certain account, your For You page will consist of the same looking people.

Image Source.

Although these filter bubbles may sound familiar, TikTok’s algorithm makes it significantly evident to its viewers. But not only has race and ethinicity played a part in who goes viral, but body image too! It perpetuates the illusion that normal people on TikTok who have become famous are perfect.

For these reasons, I am excited to discuss the newest trend that radiates the body positivity and confidence children and teens these days need.

It began in August when @lizzykhang began the best TikTok chain to exist.

@lizzykhang

Own it ❤️

♬ Side to Captain Hook – sound remixes

You can see that the video begins with her dancing and looking slim and trendy. Then when the beat drops, she lowers her pants to expose her natural belly and keeps dancing happily. @lizzykhang said, “The point of the video was to show young girls it’s OK to have a tummy… every body is a beautiful body. It’s 2020, we don’t body shame anymore.” The video went viral with over 20 million views and it continued as four other girls duetted and followed in her footsteps.

@siennamae

@xobrooklynne this is no doubt better than any other tik tok chain created

♬ Side to Captain Hook – sound remixes

Let’s bring attention to the last two girls to duet. @siennamae and @xobrooklynne have become inspirations to many young girls who may not feel comfortable in their own skin. At only age 16, Sienna and Brooklynne have made a mark for themselves as they have become a part of the positive and loving process of accepting all body types on TikTok.

Brooklynne was the first to gain immediate attention for showing off her natural belly. At first, the attention was full of hate. Trolls commented on her weight and belly, telling her to “drop some calories.” Instead of spreading more hate with backlash at the comments, she spread love and made another video being proud of her body.

Sienna has also used her platform as a source of body positivity. In the past few months, she has risen to fame after becoming friends with people in a TikTok content house*. She has clearly used this new fame to her advantage as she shows what a normal body looks like and how that can be misconstrued by media.

Overall, I love this trend and think that showing off natural bodies wil help young people online re-evaluate beauty standards for themselves.

*TikTok content house: a mansion that famous TikTok creators live in together to create content for their online platforms and gain clout. ex: the Hype House, the Sway House
