Have you heard of TikTok? Not the sound of a clock or Kesha’s hit single, but the app.
TikTok is a social media that allows you to create, watch, and share videos. It originated in 2014 as Musical.ly, a lip-syncing app, and later developed into a broader video platform in 2016. Within the past two years, the app has gone viral with 800 million active users and over 2 billion downloads.
It has even surpassed other social medias including Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, and Facebook.
THAT IS CRAZY.
And with COVID-19 shutdowns and more screen-time, online platforms like TikTok, are benefiting the most. By featuring videos that include dance, art, animals, comedy, etc., TikTok has raised popularity amongst Generation Z. However, the wide range of genres is not the only contributing factor to its rapid growth in popularity. What used to be a joke is now a viral app that has brought out creativity and conquered boredom.
Even celebrities, ranging from the Jonas Brothers to Will Smith, are creating their own videos and getting in on the fun. So if you don’t know about TikTok, my blog is the perfect place to get started. On TikTok on the Clock, you can find weekly blog posts that are dedicated to a TikTok trend. Since there are multiple sides of TikTok and it can get pretty complicated, my blog will act as a guide to the app’s latest trends.
Before we discuss various TikTok trends, a major part of the app are some of its biggest creators. Currently, the most followed people on the app are Charli D’Amelio and Addison Rae. Depending on the type of TikToks that interest you, different creators will be recommended on your feed, making your For You page completely personalized.
In case you are brand new to TikTok, the For You page is the initial page that appears on the app. TikTok states:
“When you open TikTok and land in your For You feed, you’re presented with a stream of videos curated to your interests, making it easy to find content and creators you love. This feed is powered by a recommendation system that delivers content to each user that is likely to be of interest to that particular user.”
Like other social medias, anybody from all over the world has the ability to reach TikTok fame. One of the best things about the app is their algorithm. Depending on user interactions and video details, you may end up on someone’s For You page. And you do not need a large amount of followers to go viral. In fact, with zero followers, there is still the possibilty of someone seeing your video.
With that being said, TikTok on the Clock will focus on specific trends to figure what is dominating the For You page and the meaning behind them.
This is one topic I would have never thought to talk about. I do not use TikTok or most other social media so this blog will be very informative. Maybe when I go home for break I can impress my brothers with all my newfound TikTok expertise. Thank you for posting and I am extremely excited to learn more about TikTok.

I think your blog topic is super fun! I did not realize that TikTok surpassed Instagram! I knew TikTok was gaining popularity but I always thought Instagram would be number one. Introducing different TikTok trends is super interesting and can ultimately engage people from all age groups, including teenagers trying to stay with the trends and even older people trying to learn what TikTok is. Do you have a favorite trend that you plan on highlighting first?
Tik Tok is an awesome app! I use it whenever I have a few minutes to spare, but I only follow a few creators. The algorithm used for the “For You” page is perfectly catered to me, so that is where I get most of my content. Maybe I will start to follow more mainstream creators so I don’t have to dig deep for the trends. I look forward to reading your future blogs and learning about the most relevant trends!
