Introduction
Kuan received his bachelor’s degree in Water Supply and Drainage Engineering from Hunan University, China in June 2016. During his undergraduate study, Kuan worked with Dr. Tang as an undergraduate research assistant focusing on new water desalination technologies from October 2014 to June 2016. During this time, he had one SCI paper published and two Chinese patents under review. He was awarded as The Person of the Year 2015 by College of Civil Engineering, and 2016 Outstanding Graduate of Universities by the Education Department of Hunan Province. He won the 2016 First Undergraduate Thesis Award as the best gift of his two year-research in Hunan University.
Kuan joined the M.S. Environmental Pollution Control program at Penn State Harrisburg in August 2016 and has been supported by a research assistantship as well as the Robert W. Graham Endow Graduate Fellowship since then. Working with Dr. Xie, Kuan focused on the effects of shale gas production wastewater on drinking water disinfection by-product formation. He has presented his work as either poster or oral presenters in a few international and domestic academic conferences such as NEGSWS 2016, PA-AWWA 2017, PSU Graduate Exhibition 2017, and AEESP 2017. He will also publish a journal paper very soon based on what he has done this year. Besides, an overall GPA of 3.95 for the past year also confirmed his diligence on course studies. For this academic year, besides research, Kuan is also assigned as a graduate teaching assistant working with Dr. Xie and lab manager Mr. Spear on CE 475 to organize and direct students doing experiments. Kuan has been a member of PA Section of America Water Works Association (PA-AWWA) since 2016 and will pursue his Ph.D. degree after completing his master’s study to make more contributions to water works.
