March 7 – 14, 2020
In Child Psychopathology, students learn about many childhood disorders, include autism, ADHD, behavioral disorders, mood disorders, and learning disorders. As we will discuss in class, our perception of what defines “typical” versus “abnormal” behavior is largely determined by our family, cultural, and social values. The embedded travel experience will provide students with an opportunity to consider how cultural variables impact the identification and treatment of childhood mental health disorders. Students will have the opportunity to participate in learning opportunities related to access to mental health care, stigma surrounding mental health treatment for children, and the status of school-based mental health care in Chile. In addition, a service learning activity will provide the opportunity to connect with the local Santiago community.
