Family Leave Practices in Scandinavia: CAS 352

Program Summary

Scandinavian countries offer some of the best family leave practices in the world. Some American industries are moving towards more generous family leave policies, so understanding how family leave practices work is necessary to properly implement them in the American work force.

The educational travel program in Scandinavia will be coordinated by World Strides, a highly reputable education abroad provider. Embedded Course Information

Students must be enrolled in CAS 352 (GH) for the Spring 2020 semester to be eligible to participate in this optional, one-credit embedded program during the Summer semester. Participating students will be enrolled in one-credit of CAS 499 for the Summer semester, which will involve assignments and educational experiences related to the travel experience.

As students will be participating in one-credit of study during the Summer semester, they will be required to pay for 1 credit of Summer tuition. Please visit the Penn State Tuition website for additional information about tuition costs.

***NOTE: Students nearing graduation MUST meet with their academic adviser before enrolling in this summer course to discuss how this program may impact their graduation timeline.

Estimated Program Costs

  • Program Fee: $2,735 for 10-14 participants (reduced to $2,475 for 15-19 participants)
  • Airfare: Approx. $800-900, depending on domestic airport
  • In-Country Spending Money: Approx. $400-600 for meals, spending money, etc.
  • Summer Tuition (1-credit): See information above about tuition costs

*NOTE: Students will be prompted to pay the embedded program fee directly to the education abroad provider, World Strides, through their website in mid-January.

The Embedded Program Fee for this program includes: accommodations in Scandinavia, including breakfasts; transportation in Scandinavia related to academic programming; costs related to academic and cultural activities; a welcome and farewell dinner; English-speaking trained professional guides and field specialists; gratuities.

The Embedded Program Fee for this program does NOT include: airfare; domestic transportation to/from the airport; most meals; spending money (souvenirs, etc.); course/credit tuition.

Note: Students are expected to arrange their own flights to/from Scandinavia (with guidance from the faculty leader about arrival/departure time windows); the group will not be traveling together.
