Amalfi Coast

As mentioned in the last post on this blog, I want to look into a few more places in Europe that I might have the opportunity to visit while abroad. This week I want to explore the Amalfi Coast.

The first place I want to see is Positano. This small town boasts gorgeous Mediterranean architecture and is located on the mountainside overlooking the turquoise water. The area is one of the easiest to visit, with the most hotels of any town in this region. It also has some of the most famous beaches on the southern side of the Sorrento peninsula., including the Marina Grande Beach and the Fornillo Beach. Beyond the beaches, there are Roman ruins near the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. In addition, it is the perfect place to buy handmade antiques and ceramics that are well known in the region.

Another way to more fully appreciate the beauty of the Amalfi Coast is to hike up the incredible mountains that define the landscape. Two trails that I think would be the perfect way to experience the scenery are the Vallone delle Ferriere and the La Baia di Ieranto, both of which are four miles long. The Vallone delle Ferriere is through a wooded area, with cascading waterfalls and medieval ruins. La Baia di Ieranto looks vastly different with costal views and a view of Capri from the pebble beach on the Bay of Ieranto. These are just a few of the trails in the area, and there are plenty of options depending on your level of experience. Moreover, some visitors may prefer to go on a guided tour rather than venture onto some of the steeper trials by themselves. For those who have this preference, the Positano Tourism Board has recommendations online as to what company to book tours with.
