Review

Smartify is a manipulable, potentially constructive and social networking app that allows users to “scan” artwork in Smartify partner galleries and museums through the device’s camera and receive information on the art and artist and then save images and information to the user’s collection in their profile. As a lesson in curation, art students could be assigned a theme and sent to visit a convenient Smartify affiliated museum to find artworks that work within the context of that theme and save them to their profile collections. The teacher could view and assess each student’s curated collection through the social media affordances of the app. Taken altogether, the assignment utilizes the app’s Vision Based Augmented Reality function as defined by Dunleavy and Dede and by manipulating the social media function applies Sharple’s “unpredictability of the mode of use”.
