Forty-three percent of the world’s population is bilingual.  Only forty percent is monolingual (ilanguages.org). But, in most cases, learning a second language to a high degree of fluency is quite the effort.  It takes a lot of nuance to understand it, and regular practice to stay fluent. So why do bilinguals have a plurality of the world’s population? Surely having a second language is vital to some styles of life in very diverse parts of the world.  Otherwise, neighbors might not be able to talk to each other, or someone could not communicate with the owner of a store. But there are other good reasons to learn a second language as well. Having an extra language can help one’s brain, as well as help people have more worldly experiences, and it can even be good for some business on both a corporate and individual scale.
