Q. If I am proposing or re-certifying a general education course, what additional information do I need?
These courses must identify and justify the following: General Education standardized learning objectives, Foundations Criteria, and Domain Criteria. Also, a syllabus listing General Education objectives must be provided. A sample syllabus can be found here.
See the general education site: https://gened.psu.edu/about-general-education
Q. Will I lose my Gen Ed designation if I do not recertify by Summer 2019?
Yes. Proposals to recertify Gen Eds need to be in the CRCS by Spring 2019.
Q. Will I receive notifications of the status of my proposal?
No. Notifications will not be sent. You can monitor the progress of your proposal under the “My Proposals” section of curriculum.psu.edu.
Q. How can I check the status of my proposal?
Go to the My Proposals section of curriculum.psu.edu and click status to see which entities have reviewed your proposal.
Q. How soon after my proposal is approved will the course or program be effective?
New courses will become effective the first semester following the approval of the report unless otherwise specified.
Course changes will become effective the date that the first published Schedule of Courses lists the changed course. This may take up to 18 months from when it is approved.
Q. How many consultants are recommended?
All General Education course changes and re-certifications require consulting with ALL campuses who taught the course in the last 4 years. This information is found in CRCS when you enter your proposal. For “add” proposals are recommending a minimum of 15 consultants, ten from University Park and five from non-UP campuses. If your proposal is an honors course please include Keefe Manning (kbm10@psu.edu) from Schreyer’s Honor College. If your consultation list is less than 15 and you feel it is appropriate consultation, please upload a statement of how your consultants were selected.
Q. Why is consultation so important?
Consultation with campuses offering our courses ensures that content is broadly consistent and that students who begin at one campus and complete their degree at UP (or another campus) will come with the knowledge we expect based on their coursework. It is also a courtesy to colleagues that may wish to teach the course.
Q. How do I build a consultation list?
See the senate guidelines: http://senate.psu.edu/curriculum/guide-to-curricular-procedures/glossary/#consultation-statement
Q. If I want to add a course suffix, is it an add or a change?
It depends.
- If a course sometimes includes an attribute such as Honors or Writing, and you want to maintain both versions of the course, then a proposal change is necessary as as well as an add.
- If you want to only have a permanent attribute version, then you can simply do a change.
Allison Albinski has offered to identify courses that have a permanent Honors attribute. Departments must provide an entire list of courses for which they wish to add an Honors suffix.
