I’ve been working in human services for the past couple years with adults that have developmental and/or intellectual disabilities where servant leadership is exercised daily. Servant leadership focuses on behaviors leaders should exhibit to put followers first and to support followers’ personal development (Northouse, 2013).
Servant leaders commit themselves to putting their followers first, being honest with them, treating them fairly, and making communication a priority (Northouse, 2013). The consumer’s well-being, happiness, growth, and safety is my main concern at work. Having a mutual respect and developing a relationship is what makes a direct care work effective as a leader. Communication is valued, by listening to what the consumers have to say I can better understand their abilities, needs, and goals to help meet their needs.
Servant leaders are altruistic, motivated, and interested in helping others (Northouse, 2013). I want to see my consumers succeed in their goals. I want to empower my consumers to do the best that they can and achieve the goals that they have set out for themselves.
As a direct care worker, I am committed to helping my consumers live successful, fulfilling lives. According to Northouse (2013), servant leaders make every attempt to share their power and enable others to grow and become autonomous. Direct care workers actively teach consumers different skills that will help them reach their highest potential. The services are consistently evaluated and improved where needed to make sure the consumer is getting the best services available.
Servant leadership results in community and societal change (Northouse, 2013). Every day I work towards having the consumers become more involved in the community and having society look at these individuals for what they are and not their disability. Examples of societal changes that are strived for consist of inclusion not exclusion in the community, and trying to stop the use of certain stigmatizing language.
Servant leadership is the first approach that has related in its entirety to my career field. I ensure that my consumers know that they are my priority and I am dedicated to helping them live fulfilling lives and reaching their highest potential.
