–students still don’t feel compelled to do homework
–one student reflected: it’s hard to have motivation online
–a grad student in education said he wants to do his dissertation on how technology is saving education right now in this historical moment
–two students agreed the internet was a space for fun, making it difficult to make it a space for education (so interesting to me)
–I’m still struggling with forgetting to look at webcam
–I’m noticing a remarkable increase in student participation and focus (compared to classroom)
so far so good, ya’ll.
The first time I really truly used the Internet was at college, so I have a permanent association between it and education. It was a lot harder to access the fun parts of the internet. Internet search engines were definitely not up to current Google standards! Moreover, the fun parts were not always legally or ethically obtained (e.g., Napster, bit torrents). Only some of us have had that ‘crossover’ experience with the Internet, where militaristic utility and difficulty (ugh do you remember Pine mail?) eventually included friendly UIs and comical memes (cats, right?). We may need to reteach the history of the Internet as way of showing students what the Internet is truly capable of: communication and education.
