The Egg Drop Fly

June 19 – 26

This week, we bring you the Egg Drop challenge to solve in the comfort of your own home. For those of you unfamiliar with it, the Egg Drop challenge involves equipping an egg with some method of protection and dropping it from a great height. If successful, the egg remains uncrackedMany of you have done this before, so this one comes with a twist. For this challenge, you have to do more than let it fall; you have to make it fly.

Shoot it, fling it, or float it, we don’t care! Get an egg as high in the air as you can and let gravity do the rest. Just make sure it lands safely. This is a chance to be creative and adaptive. Use any materials you like, and film a short video showing your egg drop contraption in action. Crack your egg at the end to prove to us that your creation worked!

You should be going through a design process in your concept development, and we would like to see more than just your final prototype. Test your contraption and build upon it, modifying it to make it better and better. In your video and submission, we would like to see you making modifications as you go through trials of testing and designing.

Rules

There are none. You are only limited by your imagination. If you can dream it you can do it. We want to see what you and can do, so there are no limits. We love creativity, think outside of the non-existent box. Teams are allowed to compete together, but you will have to split any and all prizes.

Your Video

You will submit your innovation by sending us a video. We do not need a polished video with a polished invention. We want your design and your design process. Show us the eggs you accidentally cracked, show us the modifications you made. At the end of your “final” run, crack your egg on camera for us. Private or public link is fine, just make sure we can see it. Make sure it’s only 2 minutes long!

Safety

If you would not do it in front of a Learning Factory TA, do not do it, period.

Congratulations to our Egg Fly Competition Winners!

Madison Ebersole, Deeksha Sharma, Katrina Verlinde, and Olivia Romano

As a team, they harnessed the elements of Earth, Fire, Air, and Water to launch and catch the egg completely unscathed.
