1. When thinking about a successful grid-based design, that is clear, simple, and easy to follow; the first thing that comes to mind is Instagrams layout. Instagram has a clear grid design that makes it easy to understand and use.

The grid design compliments any device whether its a phone, tablet, or computer. Each profile page is beautifully spread out with photos in sets of three, giving it clear and sophisticated look.

2. When searching for grid designs that I truly felt “breaks the grid” and disrupts the rules of grid design, I could not decide on just one design. I came across three very different grid designs that blew my mind both artistically.

These three magazine layouts “break the grid” of grid design with their uniqueness and complexity. The Bloomberg Businessweek magazine cover uses the grid design abstractly, hiding that there even is a grid design unless you look at the headings lined up at the top. The Pioneer Press uses white space to accentuate the unique design, making a simple grid more complex.

3. An example of a bad grid design is show in the image you see below. This layout is messy and crammed, the paragraphs do not have enough space, which causes the words to be close together and hard to read. The layout does not seem to have any real purpose, and is not interesting enough to call attention to the design.

The photos look as if they were just dropped on the layout without any purpose and structure, they do not accentuate the design at all if anything they hinder it.
