Please review the client and podium computers pages in this section before proceeding.
Often researchers want to run web-based experiments that may be hosted on Penn State or external servers. Internet access is enabled on the client computers by default. However this access is turned off when the SchoolVue program is launched on the podium computers and the clients connect to it. We strongly recommend restricting general internet access on the clients (by launching SchoolVue) and enabling full or partial access during the session based on your needs. This will provide greater control and prevent distracting browsing behavior. Additionally, the SchoolVue software allows researchers to pre-launch the browser window and navigate to specific URLs on the clients.
When the clients first connect to SchoolVue, the internet access is blocked. When that is the case researchers will see an internet (globe) icon with a lock next to the client icon in SchoolVue.
To manage the internet access options, please switch to the web view by clicking on the internet icon on the toolbar to the left of the SchoolVue window. You can then use the options available at the bottom of the window or the Web Access option from the toolbar on the top.
To provide unrestricted internet access, choose the Unrestricted option. When internet access is unrestricted the web and lock icons are not displayed next to the client icon.
To allow the clients to browse only to pre-approved websites (recommended), you must first add the website to the list of approved websites.
To do so, click on the ‘+’ button in the approved websites section at the bottom of the web view window and provide the URL (root URL) and then select the Approved Only option from the Web Access menu. You can confirm that this setting is in effect by viewing the client icons in the normal view. You should see a green check mark above the internet icon as shown below.
If you open the browser on a client computer after completing these steps and browse to a non-approved URL you will see a page that lists the approved URL(s) which you can then browse to.
You may want to launch the browser window beforehand. To do so select the clients, right click and choose Launch Application. Then select the browser that you want to launch. Please check off the “Execute only if the client is logged on” option to launch the browser window before any subjects log in.
If you want to load a URL from the list of approved websites, select the clients, right click on the URL and select Send to Students. This will open a new browser window and load the URL on the client computers. Please note that this option only works when a user is logged on to the client.
After your session is over, please remove any websites that you added to the approved (or restricted) list of websites.
This list is shared across all users. So removing URLs related to your experiment ensures that subjects from another experiment do not inadvertently browse to your experiment’s website. It also reduces confusion that multiple URLs might create during another researcher’s session.
