To create the sessions for your experiments, log in to the experiment recruitment website.
Please keep in mind that the norm in the experiments we run at LEMA, is to pay students for their participation, therefore, once sessions are available for signing up, subjects in our pool assume they will earn money. Also, they tend to prefer to receive cash rather than lioncash credit or gift cards. So please be VERY explicit about how you are going to pay them, when you send the invitation to participate in your sessions.
To check the lab availability click the “Calendar” link in the right top of the page under the Manage tab (after you log in). If experiments are being run in a particular day, the reserved times will be green and you can click on them to see the hours and the room at which they are taking place in that particular day (it will say LEMA if they are run in the lab). You will not be able to create a new session that conflicts with these times.
To create a new session, first go to the Experiment Management page by clicking the Experiment/Sessions link under the Manage tab on the upper right-hand-side of the home page. Then select the experiment for which you want to add new sessions.
To add a new session, click the “Create Session” button, which works only if you are authorized to administer this experiment, the experiment is not marked private, the experiment status is not “Pending” or “Denied”, and the experiment type is set to “Research experiment using LEMA subject pool”:
Next, you will need to enter the session information such a date and time. The “Show-Up Fee” is the money a subject gets if he or she shows up for the experiment, independent of participating. If you don’t plan to pay people for just showing up, leave that blank. It is common, however, to have a show-up fee of $5-$7. If there is no show-up fee, you may have difficulty recruiting subjects. The field “Participation Earnings” is commonly used when subjects get a fixed amount, independent of their performance. If their earnings depend on how they perform in the experiment, we usually leave this field blank. (Note that Participation Earnings is no longer visible to subjects from the home screen.)
The number you enter in “Seating Capacity” establishes the number of spots available for people to sign up. We would like to tell you that if you put 20 and 20 people sign up, you’ll have 20 subjects the day of the session, but that is not the case. If you absolutely need 20 subjects, you’ll need to overbook (keep in mind that you’ll have to pay the extras the show-up fee). Note that the current (actual) seating capacity of the lab is 30. Once you are done entering the data, click “Create Session(s)”, afterward the session should appear on the Calendar and be listed in the “Review Sessions” tab:
To add subjects to your session manually, hit the “Register Subject” button and fill out the pertinent information.
When you have at least one subject registered to your session, you can use the “Email Registered Subjects” button to communicate with your subjects before the experiment.
Here you will be able to send out an email within the recruitment system to all registered subject simultaneously. All registered subject will receive the email in their PSU email inbox. You cannot send an email to a subset of subjects.
To view all your sessions, click on the name of the experiment at the top left of the page. This will enlist information for all sessions that pertain to the experiment:
At the bottom, the column “Seats-(Used/Avail)” tells you during your session how many seats are empty and how many seats you made available for the session. The buttons below the “Actions” column work as follows:
- “View” takes you to the session management page for that particular session where you can view the list of subjects registered for the session, and perform other session related actions.
- “Update” shows you the information for the session (which you can edit).
- “Clone” duplicates the session, which you can update accordingly. You can use this feature to create additional sessions which share several attributes but have different schedules.
- “Delete” deletes the session (you’ll be asked twice, so no session is lost by a single click).
To create another session, repeat the steps given above or “Clone” and “Update” a session.
