Elevator Pitch, Clean Water Ad

Every day, while we get a quick drink of water for any number of easy sources, millions of people are walking miles just for water so contaminated that they can’t even see their own reflection in it. The ad below is attempting to bring further awareness of this sad fact by showing its audience a glass of water that is so severely discolored that we would never even think to drink it.

The strategy employed by this ad is one that hopes to educate its audience with a basic fact that all people can understand. It’s one picture with a simple statement but is able to carry a profound message within such simplicity. To examine the ad closely and precisely, I would use a lens of “visual rhetoric”.

The ad is not extendable to any of the UN’s other SDG’s but does a good job at appealing to their goal for clean water. It is able to get people’s attention with its good use of visual rhetoric, given the front-and-center placement of the image as well as the fact at the bottom of the image. In my rhetorical analysis paper, I will probably pick an ad similar to this one.

This analysis will be useful for understanding the complexities behind seemingly simple advertisements and how such advertisements are effective. Do you agree that this ad does a good job at using too simple elements to bring light to complex and deep-running issue?

I really liked the opening to your speech, as it presented a scenario for listeners to imagine and draws them in. I think the analysis could go further in depth on the elements of visual rhetoric as well however. I also believe you could relate the PSU meta-competencies on ethics to this artifact.

I really enjoyed your elevator pitch! Your analysis was spot on and I specifically liked how you picked apart every little part of the ad, including the effects of which words are capitalized and which ones are not. I think it’s extremely organized and easy to receive and understand as an audience member. Your delivery was very smooth and kept the audience engaged. Overall really good job!
