Overview
The Shell Eco-Marathon Urban Concept Car competition is an event hosted by Royal Dutch Shell every year. This competition challenges participants to design, manufacture, and construct and fuel-efficient vehicle that is capable of functioning in an urban environment. The vehicle must satisfy all the guidelines provided in the Shell Eco-marathon Official Rules. Shell prioritizes safety and fuel efficiency. Driver comfort, affordability, and manufacturability are also concerning of the customer.
Objectives
The objective of the Shell 2 team this semester is to complete the design for the body of the 2022 vehicle and to have the body ready to be manufactured by next semester’s team. These body panels must easily connect to one another and must easily connect to the vehicle frame.
Approach
-Review the Shell Eco-marathon 2021 Official Rules
-Discuss with sponsor what the most important aspects of the design are
-Communicate with the Shell 1 team regarding the interface between the vehicle body and frame
-Develop CAD model of the main body design that can easily be assembled and attached to the vehicle frame
-Perform tests on body design (Computational Fluid Dynamics and Finite Element Analysis)
-Analyse the electrical system from the 2021 Urban Concept Car
-Prepare for the 2021 electrical system to be implemented into the 2022 vehicle
-Research car door latch mechanisms
-Develop a door latch design and acquire the parts to construct the design Develop a door latch design and acquire the parts to construct the design
-Research ways to interface windshields onto the vehicle body
-Develop a windshield/body interface and have the windshields ready for next semester
-Research ways to manufacture fiberglass body panels
-Acquire molds and supplies needed to manufacture body panels
Outcomes
The Shell 2 team was able to successfully develop a design for the body of the 2022 Urban Concept car. This design is:
-Safe
-Manufacturable
-Affordable
-Aerodynamic/Fuel-efficient,
-Sturdy
-Easy to Assemble
-Compliant with the Eco-marathon Official Rules
