Project Summary

The objective of this project was to save time and resources for Goodwill in a sustainable way. The issue that our team decided to focus on was the transportation process. Our specific area was on the transportation of hangers from the stores back to the warehouse. Currently, Goodwill inefficiently moves hangers from stores to the central warehouse. For our design, we had to confirm that it would be easy for employees to use, low cost, easy to implement, and sustainable. To reach this goal, our team went through several rounds of ideation and prototyping. Through this process, we found that a foldable, triangle-shaped bin that perfectly fits hangers would be the most effective solution. This design was found to be most reasonable because not only would it save space for the truck rides from the stores to the central warehouse facility, but being able to fold the bins allow for saved space on the way back to stores. It also would help to organize hangers and save time for employees attempting to empty out the hangers, since there would be a machine to take them out of the bins. Our testing showed that employees found more satisfaction after using the bins, and the bins also cut the time it takes to process the hangers in half.
