Project Summary

Overview

Danger Fit LLC, the sponsor, aims to revolutionize the fitness industry by introducing innovative laterally sliding barbell grips with incorporated resistance. By combining multiple exercise motions into one, the lateral sliding grips enhance muscle development. The team should develop a lightweight and cost-effective design so that the grips can smoothly slide on the barbell and also be easily attachable to the barbell. Furthermore, the team should develop an adjustable lateral tension system and complete EMG testing to showcase the additional muscle activation.

Objectives

– Design a smooth sliding mechanism for the grips
– Increase the safety of the product
– Add a lateral tension system to the product
– Complete EMG testing to verify muscle activation

Approach

– Complete market research to identity current competitors
– Create an initial prototype design using CAD and 3D Printing
– Test prototype design for effectiveness with team and sponsor
– Obtain customer feedback through volunteer testing at campus gyms
– Iterate design based on feedback and results from team, sponsor, and volunteers and develop new prototypes
– Complete EMG testing to verify muscle activation

Outcomes

– Developed a final prototype out of nylon that smoothly slides along the barbell while also incorporating adjustable resistance bands.
– Enhanced the comfort, safety, and functionality of the prototype overall over the course of the semester from potential customer feedback and testing
– Completed EMG testing to showcase enhanced muscle activity with usage of product
