Project Summary

Overview

Curbicus is a startup company that is creating a clean, compostable solution to dog waste for urban pet parents. Their vacuum design is an eco-friendly solution that eliminates all the pains of waste cleanup. Our team was tasked with optimizing the ergonomic design of the vacuum handle and enabling mass production of the design through plastic injection molding.

Objectives

Our objective was to create the most ergonomic handle design possible to optimize comfortability and ease of handling for the user. We also had to ensure feasibility of plastic injection molding for our final design to prepare the product for market release.

Approach

– Research ergonomics and meet with professors to discuss optimal grip and handle angle

– Test different leash clipping mechanisms and determine the best method to connect the leash to the vacuum

– Make CAD adjustments reflecting the decisions made to optimize ergonomic design

– Submit CAD files to Protolabs software for plastic injection molding feasibility

– Make final CAD adjustments to ensure successful mass production through plastic injection molding

– Research different plastics and determine the best material for our final design

– 3D print and assemble the prototype

– Test the prototype with different battery/motor combinations to determine which combination gives the best performance results

– Create and distribute a survey to potential users and gather feedback on dog walking preferences, possible product limitations and design suggestions

– Participate in weekly sponsor calls to receive feedback

Outcomes

– Ergonomic design featuring a 15⁰ angled handle, rounded grip and clevis leash attachment

– Market ready design enabling mass production through plastic injection molding with ABS Lustran 433 plastic
