Project Summary
Overview
The Fossil Rock project is focused on addressing the environmental impacts of acid mine drainage from abandoned coal mines in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania. The acid mine drainage from the abandoned mines contains high levels of heavy metals and contaminants that pose a threat to local water resources and the environment. The project aims to mitigate these environmental impacts through the implementation of a treatment system to remove the contaminants from the acid mine drainage.
Objectives
– Mitigate the environmental impacts of acid mine drainage from abandoned coal mines.
– Implement a treatment system to remove contaminants from acid mine drainage & improving water quality.
Approach
– Conduct a thorough assessment of the current acid mine drainage treatment system.
– Determine the feasibility of each solution and conduct a cost-benefit analysis.
– Prepare a detailed implementation plan for the chosen solution, including project timelines and budget requirements.
– Replace the siphon with an Agri drain system.
– Install a high flow bypass system and build a diverging system.
– Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and obtain necessary permits.
Outcomes
– Significant reduction in pollutants and contaminants in the acid mine drainage.
– Improved water quality in surrounding water bodies.
– Increased efficiency and effectiveness of the treatment system.
– Cost-effectiveness and comparison to proposed treatment methods.
