Project Summary

Overview

The purpose of this project was to redesign the Barron Innovation Hub in State College. We had to calculate loads, design members, and analyze our structure. This was an iterative process of hand calculations, design choices, and refinement to produce our structure that we have now. Through the use of SAP 2000 and architectural drawings, we redesigned the building changing different aspects and going through the entire engineering design process.

Objectives

The goal of this project was to design a building that would serve the purposes of the current Barron Innovation Hub and would do so in a safe and attractive manner.

Approach

-Review the current building and its use

-Evaluate the design layout of the building

-Consider multiple design layouts for the building

-Consider LEED certification methods that can be utilized in the building

-Select one design that is the best fit for the project

-Calculate the loads that will be applied to the building

-Design the building using the SAP 2000 software

-Evaluate the SAP 2000 analysis to determine the loads are structural members are subject to

-Design columns, beams, lateral bracing, connections, and footings for the loads

-Utilize SAP 2000 to determine whether our structure is secure

-Produce a report on the project

Outcomes

-New Eric J. Barron Innovation Hub is a space that allows students to do the same activities they did in the current building

-Offers outdoor space for students to enjoy

-LEED certification produces a smaller carbon footprint, renewable energy, and higher quality of life

-Refinement of members in building led to cost savings
