Project Summary
Overview
The problem presented to our team is to oversee and manage the construction of “West 2,” a multi-story new engineering building on the Penn State campus. The corresponding challenges facing our team include developing a detailed project schedule that follows the work breakdown structure, creating a cost estimate using Bluebeam software, and establishing risk and safety programs. Additionally, Group 8 construction designed an individual shallow footing foundation based on the structural plan provided. The design depended on multiple parameters such as the bearing capacity of the soil, the total service loads, and the minimum steel reinforcement required.
Objectives
The purpose of this project was to give Group 8 Construction the opportunity to utilize the knowledge and skills of our Penn State coursework to develop a competitive bid proposal of a real-life facility written as a final report. The objective of the report was to show that our company was the best fit to complete the project on time and within the allotted budget. The report included the scope of work, a work breakdown structure used to develop a schedule, a detailed cost estimate, and our risk and safety programs.
Approach
Developed an overview of the project and defined the scope we will work within
Created a Work Breakdown Structure and established a list of activities
Performed quantity take-off for each activity and estimated team rates and duration
Coordinated logical job relationships and performed scheduling calculations
Analyzed resources and developed resource profiles
Estimated direct and indirect costs, and created a project procurement chart
Developed plans to manage safety, quality, and risk
Prepared a cumulative final written report
Outcomes
The project scope was clearly defined
The WBS was completed in depth which included all activities
Take-off quantity ensured price was met within the budget
The schedule was successfully made by having predecessors and successors in the correct order
Resources were correctly assessed and assigned to project teams
The procurement chart was correctly and clearly made
Risks were minimized, while quality and safety were properly held to client standards
Final report completed
