Project Summary

Overview

The rooftop patio on the 4th floor of the EDI building at Penn State lacks a shading system, making it less convenient for anyone wanting to use the area. Our project focuses on transforming the rooftop patio into a comfortable and inviting space. To accomplish this, we designed a rotating louver awning system that not only provides shade and protection but also enhances the overall look and feel of the rooftop.

Objectives

The main objective of this project is to develop a rotating louver system that allows for adjustable shading and protection from weather elements. We were also tasked with creating a design that integrates seamlessly with the existing rooftop patio structure and enhances the overall aesthetic appeal of the patio. Along with this, there was a focus on ensuring the awning is durable, low-maintenance, and compliant with relevant building codes and safety standards.

Approach

We started this project by conducting a thorough analysis of the rooftop patio’s dimensions, existing structure, and environmental factors. Then we had to define the customer and sponsor needs and decide what the final outcomes should be. Next, we coordinated with contractors and manufacturers for the building and installation of the awning system. Lastly, we utilized computer-aided design (CAD) software to create detailed drawings and models of the awning design.

Outcomes

The main outcome of this project was the design of an awning system that fulfills the needs of patio users as well as enhances the aesthetic appeal of the EDI building. This awning would also provide improved usability and comfort of the rooftop patio for faculty and students.
