This project included the redesign of a medical facility in which our group was tasked with redesigning all structural components through calculations and ETABS analysis to accommodate the calculated loading.

Project Summary
Overview
The presented task for this project was to redesign the structural system of the Geisinger Medical Center in Buckhorn, PA. Several structural systems and design modifications were considered during the redesign of this building to try and create the most efficient system possible. Load calculations, ETABS modeling, and the design of all structural components are the challenges presented to our team. Our references such as AISC Steel Construction Manual 16th Edition, ASCE 7-22, and ASCE Hazard Tool, were used to analyze the forces acting on our building to allow for the selection of the proper structural elements.
Objectives
Collaborate as a team to efficiently redesign the structural components of this Medical Facility. Given architectural drawings, interpret them and propose an effective design for this medical facility that is economical, efficient, and sustainable.
Approach
Gather and review architectural documents.
Calculate all loads that will be applied to the building.
Model building in ETABS.
Assign sections to different members based on preliminary load and sizing calculations.
Run analysis and refine preliminary section choices in ETABS.
Perform preliminary connection designs and refine as element sizing changes.
Complete calculations for connections, footing, base plate, and column splice.
Finalize all structural designs and implement any final changes in ETABS.
Outcomes
Selected safe and efficient members where 0.6-0.9 of their strength was used.
Implemented several sustainable aspects to lessen the carbon footprint.
Utilized a slab on the roof rather than k-joists, added bracing to the third floor, and removed the parapet all to simplify the design and construction process.
