Marathon Read Event
During this annual event, volunteers take turns reading over a 24-hour period. This year’s event, “The Political Imagination” focuses on literature surrounding various political themes, by authors from around the world. Anyone may volunteer for two to five minutes of reading. Groups — classes, teams, social organizations — are encouraged to participate by volunteering for larger blocks of time. Remember, it gets really fun in the wee hours of the morning. There will be pizza, t-shirts, and other surprises. You can also choose to read in Spanish, French, Japanese, German, Chinese, Portuguese or Russian… in fact it’s encouraged. Reading list includes the Declaration of Independence, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Letter from Birmingham Jail, Selections from Whitman & The Hunger Games.
Financial Literacy Workshop
Budgeting, saving, investing, debt, student loans, risk management…Where do you even start? During this session, Brad Yeckley from the Financial Literacy Center will talk about financial literacy, the ability to make smart financial decisions for a lifetime of well-being.
Building a Relationship with your Adviser Workshop
Your adviser plays an important role in your academic success. In this session, you’ll learn about the advising structure, how to identify your assigned adviser, what to bring to an advising appointment, and how to schedule an appointment. You’ll also go over appropriate questions to ask when meeting with your adviser to get the most out of your 30-minute appointment. Additionally, you’ll learn how to get a copy of your degree audit and the importance of referring to the audit when scheduling courses.

How to Read a Degree Audit Workshop
Not sure how to read a degree audit, or what it even is? Degree audits help you come up with an academic plan and are important to understand. That’s why there’s a whole session devoted to it. You’ll learn how to interpret degree audits to identify remaining degree requirements and formulate an academic plan. This session will also go over how to navigate the university bulletin to find course descriptions and prerequisites.

Interested in Tutoring? Penn State Learning can help with tutoring and Guided Study Groups (GSGs). Be sure to attend this event to learn more about tutoring services offered by subject including Chinese, Japanese, French, Italian, Spanish, Mathematics, Public Speaking, Writing & World Campus. Also Guided Study Groups to support students enrolled in challenging larger lecture courses such as Accounting, Economics, Mathematics, Sciences & Statisitcs.
Campus Involvement 101 Workshop
Penn State has more than 1,100 student organizations. This session will help you figure out how to find and utilize the student organization search engine. You will learn how student organizations and para-professional experiences (such as Residence Assistant or Peer Health Educator) can supplement what you’re learning in the classroom and can be used on your résumé. This session will also go over the importance of finding a balance between campus involvement and academics. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to learn about student organizations within the College of the Liberal Arts.
