Students interested in understanding and managing their finances are urged to attend Dr. Cathy Bowen’s financial literacy presentation, “10 Things College Students Should Know about Money,” on Wednesday, April 10, 3–4 p.m. in Foster Auditorium, 102 Paterno Library. Bowen is a professor and extension specialist in the Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology and Education at Penn State. Her work focuses on helping Pennsylvania residents address perennial consumer issues such as budgeting, using credit, recordkeeping, consumer rights and responsibilities and teaching children about money. Bowen directs a volunteer income tax assistance site (VITA) where law and accounting students serve as volunteers. Her course Consumer and Financial Skills (AYFCE 270) is ideal for students who want to learn how to make key decisions early in life that can secure their financial future. Bowen’s work has received national awards by professional organizations and has been featured on NPR, National Public Radio and the former CNN Open House.

Bowen earned a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) State University in Greensboro, North Carolina and completed her master’s and Ph.D. at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.
